A Shot in the Dark

July 16, 2011 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Ran the 8th Annual Winking Lizard Shot in the Dark 4 miler downtown. Coach said at the end of semester to do a race, to get back in the mood. While this race didnt really do that, it was still a lot of fun and showed me what needs to get done.

My Mom was going to come up and watch, but plans changed due to my grandmas funeral. Headed out on the RTA alone, got my number, then chilled in the shade till warmup. Cohara was there with some friends. We chatted for a while, then I went on my warm up, basically loops around the Q and Progressive Field. Shoulder blade hurt on the warm up. Stretched out really well, did some drills and striders, then headed over to the line. Even though it was the afternoon, it was pretty hot out.

Started in the back a little. Cohara pointed out Colby Alexander. The people I started with were not going my pace, so when I got out on to the road and the bridge, I swong out to be in the pack. Went out way too fast like 5:50. Made it through the 2 mile mark ok in Ohio City, but the way back I was hurting. Very tired, so leg speed, felt like a fast training run, or a slow tempo (actually it felt like when your legs just give out in a tempo) tried to push on the bridge back downtown, but we had a head wind and I didnt have much left in the tank. Still happy with my time. I wanted to break 26. I have done no speed at all, so its definitely understandable. Just goes to show how much we need to put into our tempos and workouts. We need to be going into a race with confidence, knowing we did what we could to prepare. Obviously, I wasnt thinking that today. I was just going out to have fun, and get a sense of what needs to be done. Ankle and legs felt good though. THey were just slow and heavy...

Having said that, I was rocked when I finished. Cooled down with some loops around Progressive. I was really tired... and I felt weak. Stretched on the steps of the Q. L7 too. Then I hopped on the train and went back home. The sandwich line was real long and I was tired.

Got back, rolled and abs upstairs. Its weird not seeing anyone else in the house... Hope camping is fun.

Fun day though. Great to see everyone having a good time downtown too. Excited for the season. Good check to see how racing is such a differnet level then the summer training we have been putting in.
