The 2011 Bill Sudek Invite today. Real small meet. If I wouldn't have won I think I would have been much more disappointed with how things turned out. I feel like I could have gone much faster on some parts and need to be tougher in rough conditions. It was 90+ degrees at race time. But the course was still soggy on top although a lot better than it was for inter squad last week. We'll see what CoachL has to say when we meet Monday at practice.
(Note I forgot my watch so there's no times for these)
Got to the meet early for pictures. Felt pretty relaxed. Just kinda chilled with the guys. The nerves didn't set in until I was sitting in the pavilion for like an hour after pictures were done and our WU started. Just kinda chilled and discussed a lot of stuff. Still felt really relaxed. I also drank a shit ton of water.
WU on the trails through the woods. Detoured from my normal WU attire since it was so hot. Just the 03 T-shirt and shorts. An out and back on the horse trails. Felt really warmed up but pretty good. Nothing was really bothering me. Misc drills in the shade by the pavilion, then jersey on and over to the line. Maybe like 2 strides and then CoachL called us in for the prerace huddle. She told us to not lead and lay off the first mile, race when we got to the top of the hill, and try to beat Allegheny since they were pretty much the only other legit team there.
Got out and felt the slow almost right away. No one really took up the pace. I feel like I kinda got pushed up to the front along with Grogan. I just decided at that point to just kinda chill and feel good if no one else wanted to force the pace. So I just chilled. Chilled pretty much up through the mile which we reached in like 5:22 or 23. At that point a couple Allegheny guys took up the pace. Just kinda covered their move and ran with them through the abbreviated first loop that turns the 5k course into a 6k. Kinda didn't feel very good at that point. My legs felt heavy and I kinda allowed a several foot gap to open up and I feel like I might have even lost mental contact at that point with them. This continued to the hill. I began gaining on them at the 5k mile mark and without really pushing consciously passed them both by the top of the hill at about 3k. Came through 2 miles in like 10:58 or something (don't really know exact splits). Was away at that point. I can really use work pushing when I'm running alone. I feel like I kinda relaxed too much and should have pushed harder. Pretty comfortable all the way in from there. The heat sucked but other than that not too bad. Mistook the first cut for the finish and had to be directed a little further on to the finish.
20:08, Kinda with I had broken 20 but whatever. It was hot
Cool down 5 miles again on the horse trails. Felt okay until the last mile when I got kinda light headed.
Overall the race was good. First cross win ever. But I feel like I left a bunch of time out there today. In two weeks I'll know for real where I'm at. That will really tell where I'm at and what I need to do to accomplish goals this season.
Kinda with we beat Allegheny (score 24-35) I think. Still though its early and we've done like 2 workouts. Shout out to Steel and Peter for awesome step ups from last year, to Brandon for getting back on the horse, Ben for a sick dive, and anyone who Pr'd in the deplorable heat.
Last year 19:49, This year 20:08 (19 sec slower), but 8 places higher. No heat goal was probably sub 19
