September 17, 2011 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: Cooler low 60s at race time little breezy, beautiful though
Comments:
Up around 7:15 for breakfast. A badly made waffle with sugar free syrup and a bowl or rice checks. Lots of water and a cup of tea as well since my throat felt a little scratchy and I was a little stuffy waking up.
Walked over to the course around 9am. Just chilled in the stands till we warmed up a couple miles around the course. Stopped at a about 10min to cheer for the girls race.
Grabbed my new spikes and walked over to the line. Did a couple strides in flats then spiked up and did a few more strides plus a pit stop away across the road.
After the first "cluster fun" of the day. We finally got started. From the start tried to insert myself at the back of the lead pack. Pretty much just got passed by people the entire first mile. I was just telling myself to relax and that the people would come back to be in the later stages of the race. Passed the mile and about that point decided that I couldn't just keep moving farther and farther back and had to start going with people. So I kinda tried to engage race mode. Started going with people and passing, moving up miles 2 and 3. I was rolling those miles. This is where I think I ran well.
At about 3k to go I feel like I lost the drive a little bit. I was feeling it pretty good at that point and just couldn't go with the 3rd Allegheny (WTF!!!) guy that passed me. I just didn't have it in the end and was way too relaxed at the finish. Wasn't able really to get the ball rolling when I needed it the last kilometer. Something definitely to work on for next time.
Cool down all over the course while waiting for the other "cluster fun" of the day... the results. Felt pretty good although I was pretty empty at that point.
Taking away from this race I definitely need to improve "racing" the final bit in the race. I felt way too comfortable in the final couple miles. Thinking back this is similar to the effort I've felt in all my other "all-out" efforts so far this season. In every race so far I can point to a part where I felt too relaxed and that's got to change. Looking at the positives thought its a 20 second pr, I did a decent job not getting sucked up in the early pace which is key for regionals, and while not top 10 I did finish in the top 15 and grab a T-shirt. Plus if I ran this time last year at regionals I'm pretty confident I go to Nats. That's the most encouraging thing of all.
25:14.26 20sec PR
Splits: 4:50, 9:57(5:07), 15:00(5:03), 20:15(5:15), 25:14(4:59)
Stretch a bit while still waiting for the results before walking back to the hotel.
