All the Winter in One Day

February 11, 2012 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 22 Snowing/Windy 4-Degree Wind Chill

Comments:
WU: Lennox to Bellfield, to Cemetery
10x400m Hill Repeats
CD: Extra bit in cemetery, back to Lennox

I met Ethan for the workout, concerned first and foremost about how my foot would feel this morning, but it didn't hurt in my properly tied shoes. It had snowed a couple inches overnight and the roads and sidewalks were a mess. We arrived at the cemetery, did drills, and I made a pit stop in the woods knowing it was the only place around with no graves nearby.

The hill was actually fairly clear when we first arrived and the first couple intervals were probably our best. A snow plow came through after number three and the next couple were pretty good too. But the snow kept falling and our traction seemed to get worse and worse on numbers 6-8. My right ankle was hurting me on the downhills and I was somewhat concerned around number 4 or 5 that I might not make it, but the ankle never seemed to get any worse and the snow might have helped reduce the impact some. The steep part of the hill was thankfully pretty clear but there was one patch in particular at the bottom that was really awful. The top and bottom sections were both a bit less than perfect to run on.

On number 9, the hill was in terrible shape and the snow plow had returned to clear it as we ran up, so I got to the side off the road out of its way, but somehow managed to slip and fall in the middle of the interval right in front of Ethan. It didn't hurt but did sort of mess up the interval since I got about a five second break while laying on the ground and Ethan had no choice but to stop until I got up and the snow plow passed. The tenth one was pretty decent and the hill was finally clear again, but we had a snowplow passing going the other way and we didn't get to finish extra hard for the last interval because we were crammed on to the very edge of the road.

As we cooled down, we agreed that perhaps the best thing about this workout was that it is now over. We can each go back to someplace warm.
