Because I could use my indoor time to qualify for All-Ohio in the 5k, I was able to use today to do a little bit of speedwork and a chance to just go out there an have fun with no pressure. We had a few hours between when we arrived and had to warm-up so I ate a little and hydrated well. I joined Phil, Peter, Little Joe, Brandon, David, Aaron, John Frey and I all warmed-up together (the latter three were also in my heat) at a pace slightly brisker than I would have typically warmed-up. When the race went out, I had my usual bad start and found myself at the back rather quickly. I managed to put myself back in toward the back of the pack on the middle laps and actually managed to relax pretty well for such a short race. With about 300 meters to go, John Frey was a little ahead of me and a big guy in a yellow jersey was forcing him to the outside but left a gap on the inside large enough for me to shoot through and past him. On the last straightaway I kicked hard and passed about half the people in my heat (including Aaron) to finish in 4:14, a PR of about 8 seconds and astonishingly only a little more than a second off the All-Ohio qualifying time.

Then came the realization that I ran just a little too well.... Coach had entered me in the 800 and told me I was going to run it. Still amped up from the 1500, I jogged a couple miles on the infield and had an hour to rest, roll, and do leg hangs, before it was time to warm-up again. Again, we had a whole host of people in the 800 but I ended up warming up with Phil, Joe, and Steve. While I wasn't all that nervous having already raced once and running an off event for me, Steve was visibly distraught over his last race for the team. He told me he was going to take it out in 62, which I figured might be leading the heat since we were in the slow heat, and I'd follow him and give it my best go. The race went out way faster than the guy who took it could would hold, but I was with Steve in 62. I passed Steve and tried my best to kick hard with 200 to go. I passed the guy who took it out and was winning the heat for a while, but was passed by another guy who I couldn't quite hold off to finish in 2:07.87, technically .47 short of a PR but the old one was a hand timed relay split so it probably was a PR in reality. I cooled down with Phil and John Frey around the campus, with Phil down a country road to the south and back, and then alone around campus a little longer.

I surprised myself today in this 1500. My old mile PR is a 4:41, so it was a huge, huge PR. I was very pleased with my kick and how much I had left in the tank afterward. My lungs sort of hurt and I was not used to all the lactic acid, but it turns out I have more speed than I had always thought. I have no idea how I managed to run a 2:07 in high school and while the 1500 felt relaxed and went well, I spent most of the 800 feeling as though I had lost some kind of bet. I'm fine with never running that again!

In addition to myself, this was one of our best days as a team I have ever seen. Almost everyone ran a PR and almost everyone who didn't was really close.
