Corey and I went for our final workout of the track season, my final one at Case. We waited for Brooke to finish her workout before starting so we could remove the hurdles from Lane 1 and before Chris, Ben, and David so we could keep Lane 1 clear. Phil and Mike Perisa also ran at the same time.
The workout was supposed to be at 10k pace, but we went a little faster on all of them. I ran even with Corey on the outside and neither of us wore spikes, so again it was a little harder effort than 10k pace. My breathing didn't feel amazing today either but it was much better than Monday. Still, I felt a little stiff and strange. We spent the warm-up talking about the 10k performance list and who we thought would be in it from the other schools.
This is the point in the year where I need to heed the advice of my high school swimming coach when it comes to races: "Go with what you know and not how you feel," because the taper is causing my body to tell me strange things. I need to ignore it, clear my mind, and run at the ability level I am capable of rather than a whim of the moment.
This weekend to me will be something more; my last race as a collegiate athlete, my last on a real team, and my last in a Case uniform. It will be a lot of lasts. But, I want it to also be an important first: my first time ever scoring a point for our track team. Astonishingly, I have never done that before. Now is the time, long overdue.
