Oregon Trip '08 - Day 7

Per usual, I was up quite early, awaking before 0700 to pack up and get breakfast prepared. The plan was for all to be out the door by 0900; Behrs and I had to get to Eugene to check into our apartment, and Casey was headed to an engagement in Portland. After attending to my bags and our laundry, I whipped up the TRANcake batter and set that aside before dressing.

Around 8ish, the boys were awake so the TRANs were prepared and we all feasted on their glory. Before long it was 0900, so the Celica was packed for one last time, bikes loaded, and we bid goodbye and thanks to Casey and headed west for the last leg of our trip.

The drive through the Cascades to Eugene was eventful only because of how much snow remained in the mountains and foothills. Little seems to linger in Bend, on the west side, but in the mountains and the hills on the east side, there was a signficant snow pack remaining. While cool, this means the trails of the mountains we love will be closed longer that usual into this summer.

We arrived in Eugene around noon and, beside mistakingly taking the business route through Springfield, made it to Northwest Christian College with no trouble. And before 1300, we were completely unpacked and checked in!

Time to run!

I wasted no time getting down to business with Behrs. We did a quick, easy loop on the Pre Trails -- scarcely hitting the woodchips before turning back -- and headed to Hayward. As we suspected, it was closed to the public, so we headed for the practice track, now reduced to a single 80m straighaway. On that warm-up, I emphasized to Keith the "3 keys" to well-rounded training: (1) aerobic fitness, (2) core and resistive strength, and (3) agility. Too often we (literally Keith and I, but generally all runners) neglect the latter two, choosing instead to just "run" and hope we run fast and stay healthy. The reality is, both Keith and I have broken down because we've neglected those aspects that make us well-rounded.

As such, our first order of business at the practice track was the introduction of "A's and B's". These are considered "sprint drills", but they benefit everyone by developing proper form and quicker stride turnover.

After the demo and completion of A's and B's, I ran Keith back to our place and continued back on Pre Trails. I felt pretty good, but still a bit tired from the long week and yesterday's bike and run.

Upon returning, I also demonstrated my lifting program (using only 2x 10 lb and 2x 20 lb dumbbells) and a refresher on the circuit. By the time we'd done all that, we were both wiped out.

That thereby completed an amazing trip. We only hope the rest of the summer will be equally sweet.
