Lowes Creek Trails

May 3, 2009 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: high-40s, PURE SUN! :)

Comments:
Woke up at 0600 after a fitful night's sleep to get in the long run before spectating the Eau Claire Marathon. I didn't feel too awful upon waking, which was good. Slammed a little cup of awful Days Inn coffee, had a Clif bar, and I was off. I should've hammered about a L of water...as I would find out.

I was pretty sluggish on the roads en route to Lowes. Ran "Kevo's Pussy Loop" on the way there, which basically runs a loop around his house and the Bollinger IM fields. From there I took the old route to Lowes. Had to make a grind stop on the way there, then again once at Lowes. But after that, I felt fine.

The trails -- especially the single-track -- at Lowes were in INCREDIBLE SHAPE. That, plus the weather, made this a terrific, at least 4-star run. The only missing link was my fatigue. About 7 miles in I ran into "Cornbread" (aka Dennis McGraw), the ECM coach and I actually ran with him for about a mile. After that, my legs felt a ton better. I did the 5-mile singletrack loop, shortened, because I was short on time.

The last couple miles coming back into town were ROUGH. I was tired, but as I soon found out, it was mostly dehydration. These opportunities are good, though, as they make you focus on GOOD FORM.

Stopped off at Hampton Inn, where I slammed a ton of OJ and hammered 2 bananas, then I jogged back to Days Inn.

The marathon was pretty cool: since I was late, I had to walk 2+ miles to get my bike, but after that I biked all over town watching the race unfold. It was a good battle between Tony Meyers and Pat Russell in the last 12K. They were dragging ass the first 18 miles with no other comp, but then they really uncorked it. Meyers had a 50-100m lead with 3-4 to go, but Russell pulled even at 24, then took the lead at 25 to win by maybe 10s. Mack finished a distant 3rd.

Mack, Steve-o and myself went to Milwaukee Burger Co for some snacks: no burgers were had (nor beer!), just some apps, but they were good. Most odd: we ran into GUSTY! Hadn't seen him (an old UWEC alum) in AT LEAST a decade, I bet. WOW.

Good weekend...and VERY glad I didn't have to bike home!!!
