Sudeck Invite

September 1, 2012 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
First meet of the season. Sudeck was interesting this year. Allegheny was the only team that showed up, so it was just like a cool little dual meet. A great lead in to our season. I had a tough time sleeping the night before since it was hot as balls out. I had to recruit another fan to cool me off. I felt pretty refreshed and good in the morning though. We rolled out early but very efficiently. I was very impressed.

As soon as we got there did the whole pictures thing, which was actually a lot of fun. It was starting to get really hot though as we were taking the pictures. I was sweating a lot in just my tshirt. I though it was gonna be cool and rain today, but it turned the other way, to the classic Sudeck weather. We did a decently long warm up around the two loops of the 6k course. Longer than I usually do. I felt kinda tired and dehydrated after... Stretched out a little but not too much. I had to go to the bathroom, but the line was really long, so CKells and I hit up the woods with some napkins. Havnt been out there for that type of business in a while... Anyways we kinda rolled into drills and striders in a nice fashion. It was a very low pressure environent. I always feel like Sudeck should be like that. Its the first meet, a building block for the rest of the season. Its not the whole season itself. I repeated my mantra "Flip the Switch" to myself.

We had groupings for the first mile of the race. I liked the groups, It seemed like we could all fit together and race conservatively and smart. The race started out, and Group 3 was infront of our group 2. I knew we were gonna slow down, so I tried to get people to swing to the outside. As we were going down the first hill after we cross the road, I fell into a hole and went spread eagle out. I am so happy I didnt roll or hurt anything. In one solid motion, I was up again and surged to get back with Wyatt, our group leader. We were all still packed up at the mile mark, which was very slow (5:30ish). We were supposed to go through at 5:15-5:20, which I feel we are very capable of. From there, Drew seemed to pack up with Mercer and I was hanging back with Wyatt, Aaron Dong and a few othre people. I made a nice surge near the old 5k mark and started to lead our group. My race plan was to run the first part and stay with every one. Check on that. Then I wanted to cruize comfortably and in a good racing rhythm in the outer loop. I started to drift back a little and feel fatigued. I should have kept up with those packs. Wyatt and Gabe pulled a bit ahead of he and I made an effort to stay as close to them as possible. I had a real though time down the hill, I got gapped. That was a switch moment I did not execute. As usual, I have taken note and can now improve upon it. I really wanted to relive my plan from last year, going balls out in the last loop around the field. As we came to the road though, we hit the bees nest. I got stung on the Left quad. I started to freak out, since I am mildly allergic to bees. I tried to gun it, but there was no one near me, and I didnt want to go into shock or whatever. That all lead me to cruizing in the same distance away from Gabe as I was at the road. Not ideal, but hey, fuck those bees.

Not as gutsy a race as last year, but it was way faster (40 seconds) Thats a good sign. Legs felt ok after actually. I know there is a lot more to come from me. There were goods and bads about this race, but the platform I have built is shaping up to be a pretty good one, and one I can bring my own success to.

Did a cool down with a bunch of people in the outer loop. My bee sting was starting to swell up, but not as bad as in the past, maybe I am over it... When we finished I milled around with all the fans and family. Such a great environment at the farm.

Essentials: Stretch, roll, Ice

Quick stretch, felt good with the long cool down. Also hit the sting with an ice pack. Legs felt good today, not as "fast" as I would like in the future, but he we will move up from here. Actually, right now the sting does kinda hurt and is swelling up, but I think I can still run with it, its not in a crucial region.

Good race today everyone. Hope you had fun. I did and this makes me so excited for the season. I remember what it is and why its so fun. And why I want to put in the work that I do. I am excited for the 8k. I finally figured it out, and I am gonna flip every switch I find. Especially when I start getting more workouts under my belt.
