2012 Oasis Zoo Run 10k + Canadian 10k Road Race Championship + 2012 Timex Series Grand Final

September 22, 2012 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: overcast and damp

Comments:
When you have a bad race, there's always something to learn from the experience. However, the only lesson I can take from this day is that "when you're sick, you suck." You may be able to go out for a training run when you're under the weather but racing is an altogether different story.

But enough whinning. Here's how it went down:

We (the Elites) got bussed from the Hotel to the Zoo and had an area zoned off for us to keep our gear in. Myself and DF did a warm-up with 15' easy running and 5' at a faster pace. Drills and strides with all the superstars like RC, RW and DK, the winner of the Boston Marathon last year.

I went out with the pack but I didn't feel unconfortable. There was a huge downhill so my first k was under 3'. It may sound like I went out too hard but I'm blamming my cold.

About 2k in, I was passed by the lead pack of women. They may be the best in Canada but any honest man will tell you it's disheartening to be passed by a woman. I think it was just before that point that I began to fall of my pace.

I hit the 5k mark at 16:53; I really wanted my day to be over at that point. I went into survival mode then and was passed by a few more. But in the last 400m I decided, just out of sheer ego, to outkick the two people challenging me at the end.

So not exactly a great day but I won't get down over it or be embarassed because I was just plain unlucky to be sick for this.

Didn't cool down. Didn't attend the awards ceremonies. Instead I convinced the group to go visit the many animals (including white lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, hippos, pigs, apes, zebras) to cheer myself up. But when we got back I discovered that I somehow came 3rd in my age category and I felt bad for no-showing because that's disrespectful. I guess that's another lesson for today: always go to the awards. Suck it up and clap for the winners.

All the hair-pin turns left me sore for two days.
