Woke up feeling a little off, but got ready for my first longish road race in nearly two years.
Jogged easy to Alton from the apt, then another 2mi for warm-up. Found out the race was delayed, so waited around. Did some strides, really focusing on the "opening" and being compact in the stride.
Some good comp, including most of the faster/old-ish guys (lotta hackers, Brad C., etc).
Got out S.bound on Day Island ("the way of all the races" in EUG), looking for comfort and "ease". Felt pretty good at the mile. Tried to stay with Orin and that older dude but they gradually pulled away. Across Autzen and onto South Bank, tried to keep the distance tight but began to get gapped. Took a gel at 15min but had no water, so that was a bit uncomfortable.
Had another guy come up on me (masters-ish) and he and I rolled together to VRC before he fell off a bit. Took two tiny cups of water, but barely got any down! This drinking stuff is TOUGH!
Crossing over onto N bank, I took my 2nd gel (no water again) and choked on it a bit. Slowed down a bit, and Orestes caught and passed me.
I had my most flat-feeling section on the N back to Marist, but rebounded once I refocused on mechanics: pelvic opening and the push/pull. Kept Orestes close but he too was pushing and making a nice move.
It was nice to get off the river path and onto Goodpasture. Stride felt strong and I felt strong, too. Was really settled into and nailing the 5:4xs after a blip before Marist.
Back onto the N bank it was two miles to the finish - focused on form and "opening". Made a bit of a push in the last mile, but with no one around, I didn't kill myself.

Stood around for a bit, then tacked on 3 miles around the pond, then a run home. Not too trashed at all - only some lateral shin stuff.
PM: R SI got VERY stiff. Poop - guess I wasn't great at "opening".
