Big day today at Oberlin. Huge teams coming in, very competitive atmosphere and such. Weather was really nice, probably nicest we have seen at Oberlin, since it was so rainy and shitty last year. They did some construction to the back loops, so the course was actually different this year. We went out on two long loops (which shifted the 5k) then came back for a shorter loop on the inside of the field. Some rumors were that the course was short, but anyways I still passed a big barrier. I like the time on the internet though lol. We honestly didnt have too much time when we got there. Group headed out on our warm up, we went around the course and did part of the big loop. I just put some BioFreeze on my back, and it felt pretty good for that part of the warm up. We went out like 10 minutes, turned around, then came back to the field and did our drills. It was just Me Phil Wyatt Drew and Tim for that part. At Alumni, apparently they brought in the 1 mile tempo to help get the HR up before the race started. We just did a 2 min tempo around the field into the finish. Classic shit from HS. After that, headed back to the field house and got spiked up and I put on my spicy Japanese patch. Jackpot.
Got in a few striders at the line, then we had our prerace huddle. Coach stressed how the season was starting today. Time to step it up. I got my pants off in time lol and was all pumped up for the start. All the stuff that happened this week, with my back and with my cold, I got to focus on that before and not get nervous about the race. As soon as I toe that line, all that shit goes out the window and I forget about it. I think about the race and get ready to race. Its a good strategy that has been working.
Thinking of packing up me Aaron, Drew and Wyatt. We got out good and hit the scrum at the end of the start. It was crazy. Drew and Wyatt actually lost their shoes. I wasnt going to stop for them obviously, so I just packed it in with Aaron and we moved forward. Drew and Corey ended up with us and we cruized to the mile. First mile in 5:10ish, right on target. At that point, I started to feel like I was falling off a little. Aaron took off and gained a huge gap and I didnt respond. Stuck around with Corey and Drew. Stayed with Corey till the 5k, which I came through in a 16:30 PR. At that point, I knew I was on pace to actually break 27, which was so elusive to me. I didnt really think about it though. I just knew that it was hunting time. I like splitting up that 5/3. Its drop the hammer with those last 3k. I threw a huge surge in, broke off from Corey and started racing people around me. 4th Mile was so strong felt really good and powerful. I knew I was slowing down at the 4 mark though, I was hurting there probs the worst I felt the whole race. I made it around the inner field and around to the finish. I remember thinking you got to kick at those trees, so I started kicking really picking it up. Kept powering on the home stretch, not really catching people. Saw Jimmy from oberlin, I was right behind him, but I kinda just powered in. I saw the time and couldnt believe it. Threw up the VL as I passed the line. A good feeling to break 27 finally and keep my pace pretty consistent throughout the race. Still got a lot of speed to put in though. It was a good time for me, but I was far back in the race and still off from the pack. I ran hard today, but with more work I know I can go faster.
Cooled down around the field got a lot of miles in. Back started to get a little sore, not tight though, just weak. Still feels decent though. Get on that STEM and check in with Jess on Monday. Great performances from everyone else today. Got to see Liam throw it down and saw Coach Erin. Also Molly finally got to race, and I think she can make a craazy comeback. That would be legit (sorry girls team...) ALso, in the varsity 10 people, 10 PRs. We still got work to do. Im pretty sure I am in for Conference where my real goal is. I think I can use this season to keep powering to new height.
Essentials: Stretch, roll, ice back
Kinda stretched intermittently. I actually talked to Wyatts dad for a long time during the open race and should have stretched then. Got a stretch in in the field house though. Legs feel pretty good but Im gonna stretch my back out more. In the end, a real great day. Freakin Oberlin man its so crazy.
