Gilbert + Eveleth Loop

Weather: 50, sunny, dry, calm = PERFECT

Comments:
Woke up at 0730, ate whatever I could find (some oats, 2 mini-snickers and some mini M&Ms), had a half cup of coffee, then hit the road.

I always feel like shit when I run up here, but, relatively, I felt OK today. Headed the usual counterclockwise around the lake, then took Enterprise Trl (the mining dirt road) all the way around "Lake Ore-Be-Gone" in Gilbert to hook up with the Mesabi Trail. Ran that through Gilbert and all the way to Eveleth. Ran almost all of it on the ATV dirt road, which was soft but rough/uneven with loose gravel and rock. Despite that, I felt pretty quick, though there wasn't too much effort.

Once in Eveleth I ran past Fayal Pond and down Fayal to the IGA, looped around by the ballfields, and headed back (in order to add a bit more distance). Took the ol' "Beach & Towne Trail" back to the house.

The legs felt fairly trashy throughout; mostly from the AT, I guess, but possibly because the shoes are on the way out. The last 1.8 from Short Stop to the house was garbage, as usual. I finished in 1:40 fairly well dehydrated but feeling pretty good.

We were supposed to have brunch out at Giants Ridge, which I was looking forward to, but when we got there, it was LUNCH and the menu SUCKED. So I ordered a salad and soup. 5 minutes later the waitress returns to say, "We're out of LETTUCE". F-ing kidding me? And without offering any concession (e.g. "Oh, since we're idiots and don't have LETTUCE, I'll knock down your bill.."), she just plops the same shitty menu in front of us. F that. Out of protest, I didn't order anything else. Thus, my post-15-miler refueling was: 2 mini snickers, a cup of tomato basil soup, coffee, and a couple pieces of greasy bread my aunt gave me. WOW. :|
