Long-ass hunt

February 19, 2013 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 40s, clear!

Comments:
LONG f-ing hunt that Mr Roberts led.

PRE-run: I had our student work on my ankle, realizing that I had a distinct loss of ankle DF and my distal fibula might be stiff. He then suggested taping (a brilliant idea that I totally missed), so I K-taped it before the run.

LONG-ass run, up to the shoulder of Spencer. A little fast for my liking on the ups (tired!), and by the time we got up there, my headlamp was dying. The descent was slick and frustratingly slow: could barely see anything. THEN, just as I thougth we were done, we barreled into the woods and straight up the damn butte again! Like, climbing/scrambling 500' through shit. It was annoying. Got up there, then descended the "north face", which was pure mud! That took forever, and I nearly biffed it 10x.

I realized that our hunts are becoming like the "Mario Kart 64 league" we used to have, freshman year at the U of MN. We used to study 'til 9PM, then the guys on our floor would convene and race each other in versus mode. It was very competitive. We kept stats and power rankings! But what would happen is, we'd take turns picking races, and what each guy would do is pick the race they're best at (or, what the other guys are worst at).

This hunt was akin to that: Mr Roberts is doing crazy vert (he's done a HUNDRED Spencer summits since 8/2012), yet he's not very strong on flat running (our 7:15 pace 5-mi was a "tempo" for him). But for me, the vert (and mud, and dark) was brutal!

Finally got down the butte, and onto the roads. I was worried my foot might hurt, but after the mob + tape, I was shocked that it wasn't that sore.

Longest ever hunt, by duration: 1:45! Sheesh!!
