Hayward Field Workout!

April 25, 2013 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 70s, nice

Comments:
Got out of work right at 6 (so I was in the car at 6:07) and got to Hayward Field for the Thursday night "Flyers" track workout. It's a pretty novice group of runners, but a few of the "hunters" have started to show up, so I figured I'd go. I also heard that females were present. This couldn't be an awful thing. This is a group traditionally coached by local elites; a guy named Ian Dobson ("retired" super fast 5-10 guy) is leading it now. Random fun fact: Max King led this group for the summer of '08 when he was in EUG, training for the steeple!

The L foot's been iffy all week. I THINK my ankle is moving but...I think it might not be. When the ankle can't bend well (as it's been repetitively jammed because of L trunk over the years), the lateral foot takes a beating, regardless of how well I plant on it. So it's been sore the past 2-3 days.

I was a bit worried about doing a workout but...shit, I'm gonna be out of here soon! <2 months! I wanna have some fun, and a sunny workout ON Hayward Field was too awesome to miss.

The workout sounded OK, too: sets of K-4-2. K at 5K, 4 at mile, 2 at "fast". Short rest (90-60). The workout called for 3 sets.

Dan-O and Cliff were there, so we ran together. I made it just in time to run a half mile, and do about a half mile's worth of strides, warm-ups. What sucked was he had to run in Lane 5, which was a bit annoying but not too bad.

Dan-o led the first 600m or so before I inched ahead in a leisurely 3:22. The breathing felt very controlled but the energy was down. Stride felt GREAT! Really worked on the "forward bow", but I could tell I was still too arched in my low back at times.

We talked about the 400s being in "mid-70s", but I led it and we went 69. Oops! Felt smooth, though. Then a 32-point.

4ish minute recovery, then another set

First set:
3:22, 69-high, 32-mid

Second set:
3:17, 69-low, 32-low

Felt good, but I was GASSED, so I stopped at two sets. Dan-o and Cliff did 3.

It was pretty fun. The foot wasn't too bad, but sore on the cooldown. Back at home, I stretched it a ton with a theraband pressure on the ankle and I could feel that, indeed, it's locked. F. Gotta get that shit moving!

Good news: back felt good, didn't feel a peep out of the R heel all day. B-)
