SW Eug Track Session!

May 9, 2013 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 75? Absolutely perfectly awesome

Comments:
It was a weird situation tonight: the group workout was on bark (uh-uh); Dan-o wasn't running because of Mac Forest 50K Saturday, Cliff was doing the OTC 5K, and Jeremy couldn't make it. Suddenly, I had no one to run with.

Within hours of the end of the day, I lined up Jason ("Mr Roberts") to help, which was a relief. These workouts are SO hard to do alone, especially when fatigued.

We met at South EUG HS, only to find a middle school track session going on. Oops. So we ran to another school about two miles away. Felt tired on the warm-up but kept it easy.

The workout is the "classic": 500/200 workout, that I've done at least two other times this spring. I figured it'd be a good progress measure. Mr Roberts was also tired - and less fit - so I asked him to do the 5s, and I'd do the 2s solo. 3:30 rest between sets (Trason-like, who said, "The more miles I run, the longer the recovery" on track sessions).

Got to the track to find the field being used by lacrosse, but the track open. Did a lap of strides, then went for it.

Mr Roberts was a little inconsistent on the pacing: I wanted 90.0 for the 5s (72s/lap) and low 30s for the 2s. I could feel we were slow on the first one so I told him and he picked it up...but that almost makes it harder. Split 92 on the first one.

From there, it's a 100m jog into a hard 200. The "power stride" felt GREAT tonight. Cut a 32.x pretty easy. Then jogged a lap.

And so it went. Mr Roberts, sensitive to being slow on the first 5, really got after it on the 2nd - and 3rd! We hit the 200 in like 33! Ughz! I hung in there, though, and we rolled 87s. But that had no ill effect on the 2, which kept getting faster!

I thought about doing five sets (which I haven't done yet), but after the third, I told Jason, "If I can break 30 on this last 200, I'll be done". Mr Roberts was hesitant about his ability to gut one more 500, but I "assured him" he could.

One last 500: he began to fade with about 175 to go, so I barked at him a bit. I wound up going around him with 100 to go and cut a 90.

Last 200m: got in a few extra breaths and REALLY pushed it. The stride still felt really good! Forward trunk, hinged hip, special attention to the L elbow drive, and cut a 29! Yes!

Finished the workout and felt incredible! Man, the stride just felt invincible tonight, like I could've done that all night. I know I could've done a 5th set, but I left it be, and we jogged back.

Post-run: ran back to my car at work, then drove straight to Subway (nutrition discipline!), then to Matt's house to help him with his foot. I was rewarded with a pint of his pale ale homebrew, then a Spring Reign.
