Matt's Hunt

September 24, 2013 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: rain, high 50s

Comments:
Landlord Matt led the hunt for the first time; he's been a great addition to the group, and it's a good excuse for me to see him more than once every month or two!

The weather was shit all day: on/off rain, varying intensity. Stayed that way for the beginning of the run, then tapered off.

Matt took us hard up Agate hill, around to Spring, then down to Ribbon trail through Hendricks, down to Fairmount, then UP again about 3/4ths the way up Hendricks (via Fairmount/Spring). He was pushing the pace a bit...for us. I felt good at first, but felt sore through the hips and tired, overall. Ran through Spring on a previously-unknown single lane road back to the trail and back to Lewis'. A solid 6 mi/ 52min run.

Good convos before and after the run. I'm still thrilled about my Saturday run. I mean, fuck, isn't that incredible? Not what *I* did, but the fact that that is possible! "It's like discovering the atom!" How that bodes for ultra racing - especially late-race - is exciting.

Post-run, we had a smorgasboard of shit: I brought leftover bday cake, 1lb of cheese and two summer sausages to share. Matt brought TWO Ninkasi beers!

Mr Madsen showed up; he hiked while we ran, and then we got the low-down on his P2P run. From there, we had some phenomenal conversations about "The Ultra Experience" - namely what happens in those deeply fatiguing/painful points. The younger guys were asking us "veterans" (me with 2.5 100s, and Lewis/Dan-O) some good Q's. It was a great discussion, and I felt that my Saturday run gave me a mini-dose of that late-race experience. It was, after all, tied for the 5th longest run I've ever done (WS x3, Bandera, then my 4 other 50 races).
