The Third Battle invitational took place today. Matt and I had to leave early to get to country market day on time, where we were playing with lab band. Varsity race went off at 12. Until then, I was cold, nervous and generally paralyzed with anticipation. I calmed down a little bit after our review of the course, but I felt like--no matter how much I stretched, my hamstrings would not loosen up. Finally the time arrived, and the conditions had warmed up a little bit, but the first 200m remained muddy. Having reached the gravel, I got into a rhythm and proceeded to pass people in a composed manner. I also realized that many of my opponents were breathing harder 400m into the race than I was--a psychological advantage. I heard another coach say 5:34 at the mile mark. Anthony told me my race was to begin at that moment. I did not use my tactic of counting the people I pass, but the second mile went by quickly and coming up the hill to 2 miles, I must have caught 15 people. On the next set of paths I began to muster more energy and tried to demoralize everyone around me, passing them and, admittedly brushing their shoulders on purpose. One guy in purple said, "come on guys, don't lose focus." At this point I thought, "WELL, someone definitely just lost focus; I haven't." I reached the flags, trying to step on the gas at 4600m, and actually obeying Jason's exhortations to beat five guys for him. I made sure to beat the guy who was talking. Lots of PRs today.
