Eula Triangle

November 2, 2013 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Slept in a bit, faffed around the house, then finally left to Hardesty.

I wanted to do a big loop: Hardesty/June (18+miles, 3hr) OR bigger (+Eula = 23 mi/4hr). So I stared on S.Willamette -> Eula. Right away, at 1030, heard a TON of gunshots to the SW (near June), like...hundreds or thousands! Fucking semi- and even fully-automatic gunfire! WTF?? That bothered me, so when I got to Hardesty, I said "F it" and just went down.

S. Willamette is a great trail (it rolls, but mostly climbs, a net of about 300' but >1000' overall in 5mi), but it's overgrown with ferns, so my legs were soaked 5mi in.

Eula...is a bitch. SO steep! It's also 5 mi, but seems like it climbs an extra 1000' (compared to just up Hardesty), to the point that when I pow-hiked, I even had to stop a few times to get the HR <160. But it was excellent practice at "run mechanics", keeping trunk forward and loading the hips. Good stuff.

Hit Hardesty trail, ran the last K to summit, and was in cold, hail-like weather, then descended. Had a good muddy descent (40:xx), then once again, did a prolonged cooldown of 6min of slow jog (while refueling), then 6min of walk.

Should've gone to LCC to watch the State CC meet, but decided against. Went grocery shopping on my way back, then stopped at Matt's house to talk about his trail marathon and have a couple Maidens!
