November 15, 2013 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: high 40s, cold, overcast but dry
Comments:
Pretty good - yet annoying hard - morning of work (just a lot of "trouble cases", interestingly). Thought hard about going to yoga, but I had an allergy appt at 2, then couldn't run for 2hrs after my first allergy injection. AND I had big work to do on my UR article. So rather than go to yoga, I hustled home and got the run in.
ROUGH RUN. WOW. Felt "fine" all day, but once I started running, I had ZERO energy. This sucks! I was 2.5mi in and decided to turn back. Goddamn it. Lots of self-doubts started creeping in.
But then I realized that A.) I did run hard last night, and B.) I had literally almost zero carbs after that run: I ate 3 "OOJ burgers" for dinner and that's it, then a couple light beers last night and a pear/orange before bed. So, basically <100g carb like all day, after blowing through it in that tempo.
So I shuffled along and figured, "OK, let's see what happens", so when I got back to the beginning of the loop, I went back out again...and did the whole thing. And, remarkably, I felt better and better. Not great - nor did I ever start running "fast" (kept it in the 8s for sure), but "OK".
I'm just not in a great place with training right now. Every run feels "OK" at best. I have a lot of self-doubts: Am I fit? Am I overtrained? Is this diet OK for me? Am I overworked/overstressed? What about allergies?
I did some important rationalizations:
- I don't think I'm overtrained: my energy throughout the day is good (though "down" in times of beer gluten/allergy)
- my sleep is GOOD (not disturbed, sleeping well, generally)
- my overall affect is good: positive, not (too) moody, outgoing
- my legs feel pretty good - they're not crazy trashed or super-heavy
- I think I need to eat more (good) carbs at night, especially after long efforts. Once again, I did not do that last week (after Saturday's long + hard finish run), which led to Sunday's bonky struggles.
- I don't feel like I'm over-anxious, even with the "lady stuff" going on.
So, I just have to keep the faith, and keep listening to my body, and stay positive. AND, keep doing the right things, mechanically (stretching, drills, mindfulness, etc).
