Slept OK, but not enough. Got out the door befoer 8 and to MB by 9. Had a bit of tea and coffee but not much other liquid. Brought some bottles but didn't take them.
BGD dropped me off at MB (after some "re-enactment" photos in Carol's yard) in chilly, but beautiful conditions.
Felt stiff and slow - not uncommon after that 7+hr drive. Legs came around a bit on the downhill of Gorman Ranch. Ran by "Quitter's Tree" and kept at it. The climb up to the top of the canyon was sluggish, but it was early.
I love it when you finally get on the red-dirt double track leading to Volcano. Such great running! I wasn't feeling very good, but I wanted to "practice gratitude" so I listed all the things I was grateful for, with the most obvious I waited for the end:
- my health, the opportunity to do runs like this
- great friends (like BGD/Sara and their families)
- family
- great job(s)
- CHELSEA!
That put me in better spirits, for sure, and I had a terrific descent into Volcano. A bit too spirited, as I tweaked my L ankle twice! Crossed the low spring and again, had a sluggish ascent to the other side.
Midway through I saw some folks ahead; weird to have anyone out here. Turns out it was Carey Williams and his family. Stopped to chat a few minutes, then pushed on.
More sluggish climbing, up to Bath Rd, then to FH Road. Ugh. I felt thirsty, which was odd! Met up with BGD at Cal St (split to AS: 55min). I took a couple pulls of water, then we took off.
Really tried to be max-aerobic today: easy on the ups, medium on the flats, and more aggressive on the downs. Felt OK, but by the time we got to Cal 2 I felt really worn. Then I realized how water (and maybe calorie) deficient I was! Damn! And, it was super-dry and warming up! Shit.
I slowed and let BGD lead and, at times, fell back from him. It was getting a little miserable. Damn. But things came around alright on the sandy bottoms -- after hiking all the major ups, including 6-min hill. Then I think BGD started to feel it, because the last 1.5mi he fell back.
I was soo thirsty by the time we got to Rucky Chucky that I was searching the trash bins for water bottles (Alan Abbs-style!). But nothing.
We were on a tight clock, so there was not much walking, initially, up Driver's, but midway up, BGD and I were gassed, so we walked, alot! Damn.
Finally it flattened out. We were approaching 1PM, so I ran ahead to get the truck. Picked up BGD near the top of Driver's and we rolled to FH to get his car. From there, a quick stop at a gas station got me a 32oz Diet Dr Pepper, which I promptly drained, and a bottle fill (AND a sixer of Lil Sumpthin!)
Drove back to the house, then "the family" and I got ready to go to YUBZ!
Very fun day with the May clan, with excellent food!
A rough run - should've have been that way, but oh well - but overall a great day.
