Skinner + PRE

December 13, 2013 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 45, slush

Comments:
Pretty good morning at work - it's FINALLY warming up and most of the snow is quickly melting.

Thought about doing a full 10-12, but I felt SUPER STIFF - mostly from the high run volumes, not enough stretching/foam rolling, then an off day - which only makes you (temporarily) stiffer. This was QUITE evident after a half hour, where I still felt like crap.

Pre-race, I have some fears about not being adequately rested. It's been a LONG week filled with "relationship time" on a grand scale, and sleep has been at a premium. It's not like I care about this race; however, I want to keep it aerobic, and I fear that - the combination of big miles, less sleep, and "love stress" might thrust an easy effort into sugar-burning HR.

That said, I cut the run short and spent some extra time foam rolling and stretching once home.

After that, I got my allergy shot, then hustled over to South HS to FINALLY meet with Jeff Hess, the head cc coach and distance track coach. But even then, he was a half-hour late! HA! Stood around that whole time, but thankfully several kids I know from PT were milling around so I passed the time with them.

The meeting went well - I'm IN, I guess! So that's cool. I think it's going to be a grand experiment. The "playbook" of what coaching (especially high school) is like - last opened in 2005, really - will be thrown out, for sure. The season starts at the end of February.

Meanwhile, on the other end of town, Chels was having her exit interview with Jefe. It nearly didn't happen, because he was being a dick on the phone, again pushing her to talk about reconciliation. But they met anyway, and when it finally wrapped, she came over here and we went out.

Over dinner, we talked about it: she didn't offer a ton of details (and I instructed her that she need to share much), but she noted they talked about the big issues, their mistakes, and - most interestingly - WHY they will not be getting back together ("...like...EVAR").

She noted that she gave Jefe five reasons why they'd never be together. This intrigued me, so I asked her elaborate:

- Geography. She flat-out does not want to live in two different cities. She did cite that a complicating factor for Jefe is HIS kids, and staying close to their mother (a notion that eluded my thinking).

- Lack of Faith. Apparently Jefe is a nihilist because he "believes in nothing! NUSSING!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gjh-nFCfp2s

- How he Handles Adversity. This is well-documented, though there are many more stories out there that I have not been told.

- Lifestyle. This is two-fold. Activity: less partying, more relaxed activities, more variety ("All our vacations were around windsurfing"). Wealth: she wants LESS stuff, and the fact that Jefe "owns four houses" and lavish...well, shit, didn't jibe with how she wanted to live, and simply stressed her out.

There's another, for sure, but I can't remember for sure (communication? I can't recall).

It was an important talk for her, and hearing how it went was important for me, as well. Hearing about her resolve, then her clearly enunciating (to herself, to him, and to me) WHY this was the right choice, is huge for me.

After that, we went back to my place, all DECHK'd out with Christmas. With my race in the AM, she actually stayed at my place, which was nice. We, uh..."had some more fun" tonight. She, uh, has "some skills" that I was previously unaware of. :-)
