Knowles Track Session w/Kayla

Kayla is one of my former athletes - one of the first I ever coached. She was a freshman in the fall of 2002 in my first season coaching CC. She contacted me via FB when I posted I would be home, wanting to run. With a lot of back and forth, we finally agreed to meet at Knowles today. She's a school counselor now and all schools were closed due to the extreme weather. On top of that, she needed to do a track session, so it was a perfect fit.

We jogged EASY (9-10min pace) for 20min, which I thought would be PLENTY for me, but it felt good, so I decided to run some of the 400s. I did about an 8-second gait analysis and decided she needed some big-time hip hinge, so I had her work on that.

Her 400s were in :90, so I hopped in the first one, where I had her run her "old way". On the 2nd, I stepped out and filmed her doing the "new way".

After that, I ran 3 and 4 with her in :90, but my throat felt like SHIT, so I skipped #5. I then did two more, but I wanted to go faster, so I ran up front on my own.

Not trying too hard, and very much in control, I clocked 72.8 and 72.4. After the second one, my throat felt fucking TERRIBLE, but I bucked up and did the last one with her.

So, I wound up doing 4x400 in :90 and 2x400 in :72. Solid.

After that, another long cooldown, 25 minutes. Lots of good chats on stuff, old and new. She's training for Boston, so that was a big topic.

Pretty good day.

Texted a bunch this evening with Chels (in advance to our nightly talk). Fuck, I just miss her a ton.

My sister DID wind up emailing her today, but it was very flat. There was, like, no gratitude or enthusiasm at all. So weird, but that's who my sister is, now. Her JOB (being a cop, and an investigator for 15 years now) makes her so guarded and closed-off to people she doesn't know and there's zero that will change that until she develops a relationship with that person. I just wish I'd anticipated that.
