Long Beach Loop + "tempo"

March 20, 2014 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 65-75F

Comments:
Same thing today: slept in slightly, but not well: I moved to a shitty futon in my mom's room but it was super-uncomfortable. I also was congested with some cough, which sucked. So I was up in the middle of the night for a bit.

The plan was for 4 loops, with the last "hard". Really focused on keeping the pace/HR/form easy/efficient on the first three laps. I stopped for a bit before the 4th to doff my jacket, which I wore to protect from sun, and do some strides. Then I took off!

I got out moderately, then progressively pushed the pace. The westbound segment is pretty fast sidewalk for 1.5 miles before turning north into downtown - also moderately fast but some swerving and up/down curbs. Eastbound is the slowest: into the wind with periods of dirt/sand (along the railroad frontage), and a couple steep railroad crossings. I slowed to >6min pace at these points, but then was able to drop the hammer down fairly well in the last half mile.

Felt GOOD! Walked a bunch for the cooldown.

PM: hung out with the family, then went to the casino -- the one where my Grandpa goes to play poker TWICE, daily - for a great buffet - then hit the arcade, then back to the house. Good day, and encouraged by the run.
