Another meet, another workout! You can just stop reading here if you'd like, because that about summarizes it. Bishop McNamara Invitational went all day today from 8:00 to 8:00. I ran the 3200m with Zeke and Griffin beginning at around 7:30, after a rushed warmup with no standing dynamics. My stomach had been bothering me, but I reminded myself that I had felt that same feeling a few minutes before DC States in cross country. I had purchased some comfortable, new Saucony Endorphin spikes earlier in the day and felt well rested. There were only four or five other hoppers left by the time we toed the line. The starter whispered, "set," and readers know what follows. I jostled many people and got out feeling prepared for a race, hoping I would compete and finish well. As usual, Griffin and Zeke with their quick reaction times were immediately ahead of me. A kid from Annapolis and another in light blue sat barely in front of me. We all ran in some sort of pack for the first two laps, but the top three began to drift away and coming into the third lap, I positively bounced past the two guys and never heard from them again. I felt smooth, in control, as though I were running with good form. First mile: 5:05. At this point, much like the last time I ran the 3200m, I was still thinking I could achieve a large negative split and began (or it seemed like I began) to move more quickly. Congratulations if you're still reading! It soon dawned on me that nobody was around me, Zeke 100m ahead, everyone else equally far behind. Anthony told me he thought I should get up to him, because he had fallen behind the distinguished Singer. Pump my arms as I might, he stayed the same distance away. The worst part was that I wasn't even hurting that badly. Coming into the 7th lap, I recalled what either Samet or Zach Needel said to me in my freshman 3200m time trial, "Don't think about the last lap, just think about this one." Nobody to catch. I must admit that with 250m to go, I glanced to the other side of the track and briefly saw Zeke who almost finished second (Griffin, of course, ran his disappointing 9:44); Anthony then yelled at me "Run your race, Liam!" With 50m to go, I didn't see my time on the clock, but those of the people who had already finished, so I STILL thought some silver lining was possible. Soon after finishing I saw "10:20 L. Albrittain." I don't have any further splits. Anthony said I shouldn't be disappointed with that. 10 minutes of strength work at home. Words cannot describe this frustration.
