Exercise Type: Run
Weather: on/off wind/rain
Comments:
This was supposed to be a really fun day: the team had a (mostly JV) track meet at Churchill, but the varsity kidZ had to do a track workout back at South. So I volunteered to coach that workout.
There were three workouts going on:
3K runners: 800(100 jog)300(400 jog)x3
15 runners: 4x400 (:90 rest), 2mi tempo, 4x400
800 runners: 30/30s (3 sets "to failure")
I thought it'd be bomb to run with our top guy in his 3k workout, which had him running 2:18 for the 800, then a 45(!!) for the 300s.
First strike: I got there WAY late, like 8min before the 4:15 go time. The 800 guys started already, so I was super-rushed. Literally ran for one lap, then maybe 3 light strides.
So I ran with Reilly behind me, and it was a shit show: I ran :70 for the first lap, then waved him past because I KNEW I'd be useless. TOTALLY "tied up" and jogged the last 100m to come in at 2:30. UGH! SKipped his 300m, obvz, and wound up doing the 300 with our top distance girl. But even then, I was struggling to run :55 for the 300!
F!
I felt TERRIBLE: zero energy, legs and arms heavy, just awful. From there, I jumped around: did some 400s with our other girls (78-82ish), then jumped into Brighton's 800 in 2:4x, then her 300m.
Then, when the 3Kers were done, I wrapped up 2nd set of 400s...but by then I started feeling REALLY GOOD! WTF? Like, it was super hard to NOT run in the 70s.
So...weird day. And I think I have an explanation...
As for coaching, it was FUN to be there and running the show, helping out different kids ond overseeing things. Did about a K cooldown with some girls, then did a mile solo. Felt WORKED.
This is about what I did:
800m (2:30)
300 (:55)
3x400 (:78-80)
800 (2:45)
300 (:57)
400 (:80)
300 (:58)
3x400 (:78-82)
So a fair amount of "fast" volume...
Here's what I think happened: I think I had a total "sugar bonk". I've been doing all this sugar-burn work, but I haven't increased my carb intake. So even though I went easy yesterday, I still think I'm depleted. THEN, tack on the NON-warm-up, and my body was not able to "turn on" enough fat-burning to make that workout possible. But that also explains how it finally came around and felt good at the end.
Writing this a couple days, post, I'm less frustrated, but that workout was discouraging, as I thought I could come in and run fast. But as I recall a year ago, I had to eat a banana before these workouts in order to not feel that "bonkiness"...
