Another early morning. Adam had a 1:10 flight out of SMF, so we went well ahead of the camp run, thanks to a ride from BGD. I felt worn, but the legs were feeling ready for a nice, easy run on what's becoming my favorite stretch of the Trail.
We left just after 7AM, with a gingerly descent to Green Gate. Both Adam and I deuced, then we took off.
Kept things at "race pace" -- 16-hour pace, that is. I had Adam lead nearly the entire thing, so he could see and digest the trail. However, he was falling into the pattern of "too fast up, too slow down", which was irritating and counter-productive. I gently reminded him this, and things improved as we ran along.
I took no fuel and no water, assuming the faucet at ALT would be one. But once we got there (48-high split), it was dry. Oh well. It was getting warm, but quite manageable, especially with the pace we were running.
Adam had a great ALT to BB, and I thought for sure we'd be running a 37 or 38, but it was a mere 40. Hmmm. He did a great job of "gobbling" the light downs and floating the light ups.
The descent from BB to Quarry was uneventful, though we saw signs of the Run, as Laurie and Chris Thornley drove past in LB's truck, getting ready to set up the AS.
Once we got to Quarry Trail, I took over and told Adam I'd be "setting the old man gear". We had a slow but super-efficent race day ascent up Quarry. Adam's HR never got over 155, which was awesome, as we shuffle-tapped our way up the whole climb, up and over to 49. We stopped at the horse water, and I downed about 24oz water there, before shoving off. Split a 34:xx. Solid.
Adam led the penultimate segment, running most of the climb up, then over Pointed Rocks meadow. From there...he actually began to push the descent a bit. My feet were a little roughed up, so when he really took off - and blurted out a couple Jerker-like howls of excitement - I let him go. I felt like his spirit was finally "letting go", after running conservatively and carefully all weekend. While a little annoyed, I was happy for him. :-)
I expected him to be waiting for me at No Hands, but I caught back up to him on the clearing before K2. We ran together down to No Hands, and then I began to push the pace a bit. I figured, with camp ending, we could run some threshold+.
So we hammered pretty good, and as we rolled through the 4 horizontal canyons, I gapped him a bit, then stopped to wait for him at the singletrack. He took over and had me on the ropes a bit as we pushed hard to Robie.
Hit Robie with a :20 split from NH, and overall, we were at about 3-flat for the whole 20 miles.
GOOD RUN. Good to see Adam have some legs and stride efficiency on this final run!
Post-run: got Emily's car at the school, then we both drove to Motel 6 to clean up. Then Adam took off. Since I left my toiletries at BGD's, I drove back to Rocklin to get 'em, then back to Auburn.
I figured I had a good few hours before Emily/Roberts showed, so I went to the HS to find a nice post-run set-up by the track. Sat and hung out with the LB and the first few finishers, which included Monkey Boy, J-Bob, and Dom (who J-bob said had "bonked" in the 2nd half of the run: passing J-bob, then barely staying in front the rest of the run).
I hung out there, chatting with folks, and eventually getting a fucking horribly painful, "Prison Deep" massage from none other than Ve Loyce! It was SOO BAD! I'm not sure it really helped, but...oh well!
Em and Roberts showed just after 2 and, after a couple stops, we finally got on the road at 2:30.
Good weekend. Good chats and quality time with both Em/Roberts and BGD/Condit. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite weekends of the year.
