Hardesty + Mt June

July 11, 2014 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 75, HUMID

Comments:
Good day: worked 'til noon (including :45 of overtime, chaching), then went to a PT appointment. Mike helped get my neck and trunk moving (and confirmed I have some work to do with my left arm swing), and from there, I drove straight to Hardesty.

Got there a shade before 4. It wasn't hot, but it was fucking humid! Weird...this never happens in Oregon in the summer, but it's been this way all week.

I wanted to go pretty hard today, but not early. Just "race pace" - so like, 160 to maybe 170, and not much over. Took no calories or bottle.

Big form focus today:

- Strong elbows (namely L back, R forward, but COMPACT)
- PAWBACK + pushoff (namely L)
- lumbar arch + "stay engaged".

The Hardesty climb felt....EASY! Wow! At first, I felt tired from the past two days, but that gradually eased. And my HR stayed pretty low the whole time. Summitted in 64:30 with an AHR of 158! That rocks.

Spent maybe a minute up there, then kept going on Sawtooth. My left pinky toe was bothering me (from being smashed in my orthotics last weekend), so that was annoying, but otherwise I channeled my inner Kilian/Hardrock and tried to "dance along" the ups and downs toward June.

It was...OVERGROWN! It was weird, but then I realized that I NEVER run this loop in the summer! It wasn't terrible, but kept things controlled.

Had a decent split to the Lost Creek Trail cutoff (28), but kept going to Mt June. It's about 1.3-.5 one way with a lot of extra climbing. I was beginning to feel some fatigue and heat, but kept up a good stride and powerhike.

The summit of Mt June rocks - nice views of the SE hills. Spent maybe a minute up there getting the HR down, then turned back. Decided I needed a good "dance tune" for the descent so I played "Chattahoochie" in my brain iPod (a tune Kaci and I were talking about last week). It was fun!

Got back to Lost Creek then descended to the creek...which was barely running! Whew! Took in 21 gulps, then moved on.

Began to feel a little worked by the time I got to the bottom, but deuced, and pushed on. REALLY worked the pawback and forward trunk on the road douche-down to Goodman. Split TWO 6-flat miles (with HR 16x) to Goodman, then just tried to push it home.

I didn't bonk, but the combo of heat + water/calorie deficit took its toll, so my split wasn't great, but the overall - 3:19 - ROCKS. I've often done the 18 loop in that time, but to summit June (another nearly 3mi and 800'?) and split that is SOLID.

Felt WORKED when I was done, but STRONG. It's literally been over a year since I've felt this good...on a run, and in general. I feel like the stride mechanics are starting to come back on board, and that just makes everything better!
