October 24, 2014 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: Beautiful. 70s less wind semi clouds

Comments:
Felt much more relaxed today. It was nice. Downloaded the whole twenty one pilots album so that was nice to listen to. Been all over there stuff lately. Realized I really like running now. It's not a struggle to get out the door at this point and I actually look forward to getting out for my run while I'm at work.

There were chicken bog plates today. Some how I ended up getting one for free. That was legit. A "bog" is a dish I'd nevEr experienced till I moved here. I learned that you can have all types of bog. Squirrel, rabbit, chicken, sausage. All kinds. It's basically just boiled meat with rice cooked in broth and not water. At least that was how it was explained to me. Tasted good though.

Also I spent some time today reading Wikipedia articles on nuclear weapon expiriments under taken by the government during the Cold War. Specifically I read about bomb tests designed to test peace time uses for nuclear weapons. This was dubbed operation plowshare. 27 detonations were tested and they covered a range of things. The conclusion to pretty much all of the tests was that it's too expensive to use a nuclear bomb and it makes things too radio active. My two favorite applications were using nuclear bombs to generate electricity and to use them as a media for fracking.
To generate power one detonates several bombs in underground caverns filled with water and salt. The salt liquifies and traps lots of heat. The water is turned to steam and cycled to generate power in the way a conventional power plant works. The liquid salt acts as a heat reserve to reheat the water as it gets cycled. In theory after the 15-20 bombs it would take to get the cycle started you'd only need to detonate like 2 bombs per day to keep the thing going. Very feasible. They actually got far enought to where they tested a detonation in a cavern drilled in an underground salt deposit. Unfortunately the tunnel was supposed to be self sealing but that didn't work so we'll and a lot of fall out came out while there were also media there. It was also deemed too expensive and current prices for nuclear fuel is like 42 bucks and the equivalent amount of bomb would cost like 800. Bummer. When then sent a team down to look at the cavern created by the explosion six months later it was still 140 degrees down there!!!

To frack they basically just detonated 3 bombs close to a natural gas deposit. This sorta worked I that it did cause gas to be forced to the surface that was captured. Unfortunately the explosions were supposed to link up with each other and that didn't really happen. Also the emitted gas was radio active enough that it was deemed unsafe to use in the home. Also it was estimated that even if you used this method to harvest all gas reserves known at the time you'd only recoup 40% of the investment. Another bummer
