Comments:
Viking Invitational at Walt Whitman today: I ran three races and set three new PRs, so I have some indication that I may be improving after all! I can salvage my track season! While driving myself to the meet, I was so nervous that I could not eat the second half of my bagel, and after arriving at the meet timed the warmup poorly again. When Jackson and I learned that the mile would be 35 minutes later than we thought, we sat down for five minutes, before I decided that we were going to warmup and if we had to wait, we'd wait. With that settled, we found a shady spot next to the parking lot for moving drills, but by the time we got over to the infield, had to diminish standing to ankle twirls and leg swings. Anthony's pep talk: "Ahhhh . . . I don't know. You shouldn't be thinking about last year's race. I am really going to slap you in the face if you worry about where you are in relation to Jackson, there's no reason you should be thinking about that." Inspired, I got to the line, seeded sixth. First lap 70, and boxed in a little bit. During track races, unless deliberately trying to beat somebody, I pay remarkably little attention to the other runners--hence telling Anthony last week, "I feel like I'm alone in every track race." Feeling like things were moving along, I decided to start the race early and came through 800m in 2:21, moving past a couple people. With the race quite spread out, I tried to remember the "be aerobically exhausted before the last lap approach," but ran a 72 (3:33), closing in a 70, passing someone and fending off a challenger in the last 100m. Jackson and I did an extended cooldown, managing to lose ourselves in some side streets and asking for the way back. Warming up for the 800m (at the correct time for once), I had to talk Silas out of his existential crisis regarding his love/hatred/enjoyment of track, so that took my mind off my own race. Mark's pep talk on the infield: "Silas, you can run 800 meters faster than Liam." Thinking at the time it would be my last race of the day, and not wanting to be outdone by Erkin who ran a 2:09, I thought I'd get out hard, so I lead the race for the entire time, winning the heat (will add splits later). Zeke said I looked like I was going hard the whole time, which had been my intent from the beginning. With 300m left Coach said I was running it like a stud--so I received some great, positive input during that race. Silas and had done another extended cooldown, when, because Gabe's foot was hurting, one of us would have to run the 4x400m. I deferred to Silas, who said he didn't want to and reluctantly took on the job. I rehearsed the hand-off with Zeke twice and it still had not quite registered I'd have to run a four. We missed our heat, then Anthony, assertive man that he is, made the officials put us in the next one. I ran the four mostly alone, but with one Whitman guy vaguely in front of me in the first 150m. PRs in the 3200m from Katherine, Zeke and Tristan and a 53 from Danny.
