Waldo Lake Trail

August 16, 2009 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: seriously like high-20s to start -->60F by the end

Comments:
Slept OK, but like always, even when I mega-bundle up in the tent, my nose always freezes. Slept OK 'til about 4, then struggled with the cold.

It was VERY COLD upon waking. Got a fire going but it was sluggish; turns out there was ICE on everything...not really frost, but dew that later turned to ice, so worse. There was a thin coat of it on everything.

Had some tea (no milk!) and 2 clifs and hit the road at 0645, with some decent light. I actually wore a sweatshirt and LS over my running stuff up the road to the TH and ditched it for pick-up later.

Pretty good run. The first 6 to North Waldo felt good and I cruised along, not too sore. Took a deuce stop at N. Waldo camp and filled the camelbak, then kept going.

Man do I LOVE the North Waldo/Charnelton Fire area. SO BADASS. Cruised through there as the sun was well overhead by then, but still very chilly. Before I knew it I was at the headwaters of the N. Fork Willamette, in just over 1:10.

A few minutes later I took my first energy, a Clif Shot with 50mg caffeine, which hit the spot. Big fan of the rocky ledge at "10 o'clock" on Waldo Lake.

The toughest part of this run is from about 0930 to 0600 on the "clock" of Waldo: from there you leave the lakeview and do a TON of rolling and meandering. I totally forgot how challenging this was. Most of the trail is super-nice, easy mtn bike singletrack, but this section is legit mountain trail, and it took a lot out of my already JET LEGs. It's also deceiving, because that east side of the trail is so meandering that it's quite a bit longer than the west...so I thought I was "almost done" for about the last hour!

I took my only other stop just before the two hour mark: my calves were tight from the 10K and felt almost crampy, so I stopped to stretch them and have a Clif Bar and water. Otherwise, I drank water on the run.

The last few miles I was TIRED. Wow. This was a pretty tough "recovery day" -- thankfully the last 2-3 were relatively smooth and flat again, from the South Waldo shelter area to Shadow Bay. The last K was uphill on the road to the campground.

Spent an hour refueling/rehydrating (Black Butte helped!) and packing up. NICE little weekend!

Overall my quads "WERE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!" (thanks, Denny!): they were tired from the 10K but, since I've been stretching again, they were no worse for wear and felt "fine" as they could after a tough trail 21.
