I arrived at the pool at 7:50, and waltzed in, glad to have the facility to myself. Confident that I wouldn't drown in five feet of water, I jumped in. 10 minutes into the workout, however, one of the lifeguards showed up and informed me that the pool didn't officially open until 9 and she hadn't even cleaned it. Luckily though, she didn't go all bureaucratic on me and let me keep swimming, offering me advice on my freestyle. The two main takeaways were that when I breathe, I should not turn my upper body, just my head--and even then there should be that much movement; I also have to take only half my mouth out of the water. I noticed a difference immediately, but still felt too exhausted to do anything particularly fast; today was all about technique.
