CLR - Leg 10

July 31, 2015 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: maybe 70, cooling off - 7PM or so

Comments:
Leg 4: Danette ran a solid, hot (but dirty and flat) 8.x leg
Leg 5: Callie Alice ran her first leg, along a cinder dirt road. It was way firmer than the shitty double track, but challenging, as this was the first of MANY legs where crew vans would drive past...kicking up dust on any of the dirt roads. She ran pretty damn well, averaging right around 8-pace (maybe mid-to-high 7s)
Leg 6: Jason took his 2nd leg, rolling a stout sub-7 leg for 5.x miles on the same terrain, before ceding to pavement
Leg 7: Megan took her 2nd leg, another solid 8-x pace for 5.x miles...but this is when she'd start to feel her hamstring tightening...
Leg 8: Phil ran leg 2: presumably an easy 3.8 miles, but for some reason he ran slow...like close to 9-minute miles! As it turned out, he'd eaten some popcorn between legs and "refunded" along the course! Lols
Leg 9: CA had to run her second leg...a pretty tough, rolling 7.03 miler.

The course rolled east from Diamond, north of Crater, then south a bit, then more east...'til we were in the flat but rolling Central Oregon high desert. When I got to wristband, we were now heading north.

I felt pretty good on this leg. Once again, the focus was all on form efficiency:

- quick, QUICK stride - working on what I'd begun to hone in the pool
- "flick and pull" hip action, again
- quick, small arms
- staying forward

"Kills" were outrageiously high on this rolling road section: like maybe 10-15?. I climbed a fair amount but descended slightly more, and took full advantage of the downs. It was finally cooling off, so I ran with no bandana, but a bottle in my hip. I took no energy on either this leg or the first, just some water down the hatch or over the head.

Really beautiful run through some forest and intermittent cinder meadows. Unlike the first leg, it was really peaceful....with other runners sprinkled in, and words of encouragement when passing folks.

Logged 8.46 miles (and 282 up, -392 down) in 50-something. Again, on CA's garmin, which I had to hold in my hand, since the watch band was breaking. Major emphasis on deep breathing to keep the HR down. Felt really good!
