CLR - Leg 19

August 1, 2015 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: cold and dark!

Comments:
Phillip had planned out all the legs beforehand, but with the idea that there many need to be some fluidity.

When Megan finished her 3rd leg - slow and hurting - it dawned on me that we may have a problem. Beforehand, I gave her my double-tennis ball to massage it out in the van, then gave her some tips to enhance hip power and shorten her stride. Thankfully her next segment was under 4 miles.

Leg 17 - I gave CA the bracelet - in the dark on a dusty road - and she KILLED the segment! 7.1 miles and 500' of climbing, and she did it in like sub 8-pace! WoW

Leg 18 - Danette got us back on the roads and logged a solid 5.x mile roller in 8-pace. By legs, we were now over halfway, and were UNDER 8-pace, thanks to solid running all 'round and consistent 7-pace by Jason and I

Leg 19 - ME

I talked to Phillip - who was supposed to have this leg - about trading. This was a relatively major climb and descent (7.33, 5xx up, 7xx down) and, well, I was feeling good and knew I could crush this up and down. So I traded leg 21 for him, which was only 6.x, and all downhill.

This exchange was fun: on a paved road near a campground, again in the middle of forested desert south of Bend. But there was some good tunes and a busy exchange. I was COLD and had a jacket on! But jamming out to "Ridin' Dirty", which was on just as Danette showed up, helped.

Again, no HRM, just feel. Felt pretty damn clunky going into my 4th leg, and the combination of the miles logged, middle-of-the-night fatigue, altitude, and grade made it feel like I was barely moving. But I pushed along.

Breathing was "in control", but I doubt the HR was much under 170. Passed a handful of folks on the otherwise desolate, dark climb up "Crater Butte"...then mercifully began to pound downhill.

REALLY tried hard to stay forward, have quick feet, pull 'em beneath, and have big, strong hips on the down. Passed a few more, then hit the handoff.

A BIG Focus of the day was trunk and pelvic symmetry, so on all sections it was: pelvis left, trunk slightly right. It must've mostly worked, because my back wasn't sore and I didn't feel much left leg overload. However...my right hamstring was starting to tighten up.

Handed off to Meghan, who was rallying for her 4th leg, in 51:27, for 7.33, (+554, -722 = 7.01 pace). Solid!
