Cascade Lakes Area Trails

July 5, 2008 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 60s, sunny

Comments:
Woke up early today to head to the Cascade Lakes area to trail run and camp with Merkel, Behrs and PICO. Heard of a big snow pack up there yet but I figured it'd be OK at the lower altitudes we'd be at.

Got up there by 11AM -- just a two hour drive, which is nice. Saw patchy snow on our way up, but when we got to Devil's Lake to set up camp, there was significant snow around the campground. Ghee.

Set up camp and prepped to run. Behrs and PICO were going to hike and Merk and I run. Started the run west on the Wikiup Plains trail but almost immediately encountered snow...which only got worse 'til it was literally 2-4 FEET of snow covering the entire trail! WTF!?!

We finally had to pull the plug when, not only was it mega-ghee to run on, but then we flat-out lost the trail. We turned back in order to run east along the road to check out some other trails.

Wound up running to the Green Lakes trailheads, where we found better running -- but still snow. Ran a couple out and back on the Green Lakes trail 'til we got snowed in, then hopped on the "Soda Popinsky" trail for a few more miles...'til the same thing.

Even though it was ghee like that, it turned into a nice run with good convos with Merk. Rolled pretty good when we were on good trail and road.

Got back to camp and iced in the lake. COLD. Went for firewood, cooked food, and hung out. Good day.
