This was it: what I've been waiting for all summer; the beginning of college cross country, my first official, real, true, end-all, bona fide NCAA practice at Williams. Guess what? I screwed up completely. We met at Cole Field House where Farwell had us warmup, do 3x10 second hill springs, 3x2-minute hills up a friendly slope at 5k effort (this part I handled pretty well), followed by a 15-20-minute tempo. I had been in a large group during the hills, but fell off almost as soon as we started the tempo. After 13:30, coming around the fields behind Mission and feeling unbelievably hot, I cut it short. Although I tried to keep a positive mindset and hold onto the last piece of advice Anthony gave me--"Just be sure to limit your goals to things in your control"--but with the group ahead disappearing into the distance as it's happened many times before, I couldn't help but get a little frustrated. I wouldn't be writing so much right now if it weren't for my three days off at WOOLF, but coming into college I feel so much uncertainty about running, the one thing that should feel certain. Maybe I'm just waiting to fall into some semblance of routine which will come with time.
Yes, there will be other workouts, but did the first day have to go like this?
