Smith College Winter Classic:

I am writing extraordinarily late, on Monday morning. I've had quite a busy weekend, but it's been the best I've had since college started. Normally any revelations I have the night before a race all vanish as soon as I start warming up, but on Saturday the nerves simply did not come. Even on the start line, I just smiled and thought to myself, "come on, this should be fun." Miraculously, I didn't even lose my lap count! An aggressive first mile of 5:09 paid off, and a 16-second PR is nothing to complain about, but the final third of the race does leave something to be desired--with around 10 laps to go I did start to lose focus. Split 5:20, 5:27 plus 35. See full splits below. I ran nearly the entire thing alone, but am more than used to that by now; although DID get to catch these two guys in the middle mile. I even had helpful encouragement from Nick, Pete and Sarah all at once. Not to mention we ended up running right by our team camp every single time. Still, the 5k was over in the blink of an eye and I got to watch the rest of the meet. 5k: CoCo, 14:17 (school record!), Bij 14:21, Hale 14:49ish, Noah 15:00. WTF? (Williams track and field, I mean). Liam won the 3k in 8:49, with Byrnes, Bates and Cowen all within 20 seconds of him, Matt Rock split 2:25, 2:16 in the middle, in last for the first three laps before blazing past Ian Concannon for the win, and the 4x4 guys made 50.x and 51s look really easy. While the Victories were pretty comfortable during the race, they did rub some of the skin off my middle toes because I didn't wear socks. Dulabon got us lost on the cooldown, so my legs were absolutely exhausted when we got back to campus at 8pm.

I did no homework whatsoever on Saturday, and just enough on Sunday. I have written to myself in my planner, "If you don't start your history paper soon, it's going to suck." I fear that's a very real possibility, given how distracted I've been from academics. The other side of that coin, however, is that I'm not stressed about finals at all! I got paired with Jay for the roasts on Friday which is quite dangerous.
