March 4, 2016 (Afternoon)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: mid 50s, overcast, dry and pollen-y
Comments:
Busy day, but GOOD. Only 3hrs of patient care. Studied in the AM (18-21 on my lumbar quiz), then saw Nick (cleaned up his stride) at the clinic, a few more folks, then bolted at noon to go see Ilisa, who's still dealing with a knee injury.
Ilisa is my new coaching client. She's mid-50s, and awesome...but has athletic struggles and conceptual challenges of a teenager: self-esteem and body image issues, "the need to push", and difficulty with staying disciplined. It just goes to show that these elements are "timeless" and not relegated just to young athletes.
Anyway, I had to lay down the law AGAIN. It's harder for an adult athlete because:
A.) they are less likely to relent to "authority" arbitrarily. Rapport and trust are even more important
B.) they're not confined to the social norms of a team environment.
Despite these challenges, I think we're making headway. But having to meet her FOUR times in six weeks (my usual is once every 4-6 weeks), is taxing.
After I met with her, I went home and prepped to workout.
I weasiled OUT of the class this weekend, so I can study. The class is 1-7 Friday then basically all day Sat and Sun, so it was a good call.
I went all AM without tape today, another big step for my foot. Felt 100%. But I wasn't going to chance a run AND lift without protection, so I re-taped, then left.
Ran the long way to Oakway via VRC. It was a little pollen-y, so the HR wanted to jack. Rode high 130s at 8:0x.
Good lift. 5-sets of:
- squat (135)
- full push-up
- bicep curl (30s)
Then did a few sets of:
- step up with arm band
- boat pose sit up
- full side plank clamshell
Then did a few sets of AGILITY. Shit, why aren't runners doing hopping? That's like a whole damn trail race!
Did:
- quick side to side unilateral hops
- foward crossover single leg hops
Both were harder on the left leg: likely due to the trunk symmetry AND pelvic stability deficits.
NO foot pain with anything.
Then jogged home. Saw CA on the way home.
PM: finished a SOLID iRF column (another one on tissue healing), then went to Coldfire again. At Coldfire, I saw a former patient from 3 years ago, who said some REALLY nice things about me and how I helped him. Gosh, that helps a lot after several stressful weeks! Good to know you have an ongoing impact on a person.
After that, a "celebratory dinner" at Sabai with CA. Celebrating her new job...and sort of celebrating my one-year anniversary of QUITTING Tensegrity - another key life event!
Good day!
Feels SO great to have the foot nearing 100%! Just in time for this test to be done!
