Eula TH to Eagles Rest & back - with Lewis & Hammer

April 2, 2016 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 50s - mid-60s, nice

Comments:
First real long run of 2016. Lewis (WSER) and Hammer (Miwok) needed a long run, and I just needed to get back in the saddle, and get a foot and fitness test.

This is a route that CA devised: running South Willamette trail back west to Hardesty TH, then up to Eagles Rest (seldom-summitted, but nice)...then doubling back. It's deceptive. It seems short and flat, but it's the opposite:

nearly 24 miles (the usual loop is 18)
5000 up and down (usual 4500)

No huge climbs, but relentless ups and downs, and a gradual grinder up Eagles.

Got up EARLY, quick breakfast, then met Lewis at his place at 0630, and we were running at 0715. He and I ran solo, with me leading, going SLOW (sustainable). Then Hammer started at Hardest and ran East 'til he saw us, then we all headed SW toward Eagle's.

Felt decent: tired from the track, a bit, heavy on the ups, but STRONG. REALLY focused on:

- pelvis L, R foot in, R knee OUT --> HUGE power on the hills
- using my feet well on ups
- quick-footed downs

Fucking AWESOME run. Easy ups, with pretty low HR (like 140s midway). Had a beautiful summit and view on Eagles Rest, then blistering downs! Dang, the weights and plyos have made a HUGE difference in my descending! Without much effort, I easily gapped both Hammer and Lewis, stopping to let them catch up the long, runnable (but very technical) descent toward Goodman Creek.

Felt really good 'til the last 6 miles - started to fatigue and "get hot". HR was jacked on the slightest ups - part of which was fatigue, the other the high pollen count. But I snacked on one final fun size snickers and pulled through.

Finished a shade under 4:30 (pretty liberal - didn't stop for tree crossing or much for the guys). CA ran this in 4:30 which is damn impressive!

Felt GOOD. Could NOT believe how well I descended, and I felt like I used my hips really well, with good strength. Cardio-stamina isn't here, but it was a fantastic run.

NO foot soreness.

Wore old PI M2s.

Rest of day: got home, got my haircut, did a shitload of cleaning and home stuff, then met CA to get her Topper finished (almost done!), then home to hang out and chill. GOOD DAY.
