1200s and Syracuse University

April 28, 2016 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
We did a pretty hard workout today. It was 4x1200m with 3 minutes of rest, but most of the time the rest ended up being a little over 3 minutes. After the 1200s we did 4x200m, jogging 200m in between. The 1200s were pretty hard, the closest I came to hitting my pace was the first one and even that was still about 10 seconds off. Before the workout I thought I was only doing 3 1200s, but I found out after the 3rd that I had to do another. I didn't expect it to be fast, and it wasn't, but I actually did better than I predicted. The 200s weren't so bad. They were supposed to be at mile pace, but I think I was going a bit faster than that. The modified girl I mentioned on Tuesday is a lot better than I originally thought. She did the whole workout with Julia and Britt and is in 7th grade. Apparently she doesn't do a fall sport, so if she wants to try out cross this year I think she should be on JV/Varisty because she could be really, really good.
My cooldown was short because I had to leave at 10:30 so I wouldn't be late for a college tour at Syracuse University. Looking for colleges reminds me of shopping for shoes. Shoes can have everything you want and look great but if they don't fit then there's no point in buying them. I did like Syracuse University; the facilities were updated and beautiful and there were endless opportunities and resources available. However it was just too much for me and I didn't enjoy the city of Syracuse either. I like big universities, but I felt overwhelmed and uncomfortable at Syracuse. My dad (who is an alum of SU) suggested that we walk through Marshal Street, which is kind of like a small and flat collegetown, on our way back to the car and the whole way I was moving quickly because the environment was causing me to feel nervous and insecure. I've been on a lot of college tours, I think this was my 22nd, so I've learned what to look for on tours and when a college isn't right for me. I'm not trying to put anyone off from visiting SU, it's a great school and has a lot to offer, but these shoes were just too big for me.
Quick note, not all of those college tours were for me, 19 of them were with my older brother Justin.
Yesterday I went to Colgate University. I really loved it there. It was interesting to take a tour because I used to visit Hamilton all the time since my dad grew up there and I had always seen Colgate from a Hamilton resident's perspective. As I took the tour, all these random memories started popping into my head when I saw familier buildings and objects. We walked passed one building and I remembered playing hide-and-seek with my cousins inside of it once. I'm not really sure what we were doing, it was a long time ago, but I can still clearly imagine the wooden benches, dark classrooms, and dusty floor in the attic. It was kind of funny because while the tour guide was talking about Colgate's Natural Sciences building, I would be reminded of some silly and unexplained memory.
Colgate is definitely a school I'd apply to when it's time for that. It's not too far, I like the campus and dorms, there are small classes and they have great academics. I think I could probably get onto the XC and track team in two years, it's just a question of whether I would want to. I may want to just focus on my classes and possibly spend a semester or two studying abroad. I think I would still play club sports because freshmen and sophomores get unlimited meals and if I didn't find something active to do I'd be saying hello to the freshman 15 a few weeks into the first semester.
I'm not sure when my next college tour will be. Probably not for a while, like not until late summer/early fall.
