Comments:
I was really nervous about the meet this morning. Usually I’m pretty relaxed when it comes to racing, but I wasn’t in the morning for some reason. I distributed yearbooks during my lunch again. Not as many students came to pick up their yearbooks as on Wednesday. When we got to the meet I wasn’t sure when to start warming up, but I looked over the order of events and decided to warm up at the start of the 1600 based on my estimate for how long the races would take. I did my progressive warm up and the timing actually worked out better than ever before. It wasn’t until after my warm up that I realized how hot and sweaty I was. I’m really glad I didn’t wear my uniform top because it would have been soaked by the time the 3k actually started. I was talking to Lizzy before the 3k and I told her about how I was going to try and hang on the Vestal girl seeded ahead of me, but when I turned around I saw that she had been standing right behind me the whole time. I knew it was the same Vestal girl I was talking about because she had her number on her leg.
The 3k went off not much later and I went on way faster than at Parkhurst. So much faster that I came within a few seconds of breaking my 1500 meter pr. I just stuck with these two other girls for the majority of the race. One was the Vestal girl, who didn’t move away from me until the last 300 meters, and the other I think was from Corning. She started falling behind on the last few laps. In the last 200, I could feel myself seriously overstriding, but at that point I just wanted to finish and didn’t care what my form looked like. There was an elmira girl about 25 meters ahead of me but I didn’t pass her. After the race I was sitting on the track facing the Elmira girl and we were both just looking at each other and not saying anything, so it was kinda weird. I got up after a moment and said “nice job” but she just gave me a blank stare and kept breathing really heavily. I didn’t know until later that it was Mackenzie Tubbs who is one of Elmira’s top cross country girls. I guess she had a really bad race, but this was still an important moment for me because I used to think that the girls like her would always be way faster than me, but now I’m beginning to realize that maybe I can run with them this fall.
I didn’t break my pr in the 3k. My dad was saying that it was because of the hot weather, but I didn’t feel the heat at all when I was racing. This was my last time running the 3k this year. I guess I’m okay with that. Next year I hope I’ll be able to go out like I did today, and then finish even faster.
I drove back to Ithaca with my dad and when I got home I looked at the girls' xc group chat to see what the results were. The girls won! I was really excited about that because Elmira and Corning destroyed us at the dual meets so a lot of people probably didn't expect us to win.
