Fuji-Maiden loop from Gold Lake with CA

July 17, 2016 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 50s --> 70

Comments:
Slept OK and a fair amount. I got up ahead of CA and got some coffee and milled around with the trail workers. We packed up and left for our run just past 9AM, as all the workers were going out for more work. Pretty epic amount of work done on the course!

We did the classic Fuji-Maiden loop: from Gold, following the course up-down Fuji, to S.Waldo, Mt Ray trails, then past the mile-20 AS, up to Bobbly Lake trail...then SOUTH (right) on the PCT to Maiden AS, then up-down Maiden, back to Gold.

I thought this loop might've been "only 25", but it was a solid 28-plus!

Ran CA's "grind pace" (race pace?), which she kept much easier in the first half, so lots of hiking up Fuji, and a fairly subdued descent to Mt Ray AS. I felt OK and just kept her rhythm.

Man, it was great to run on cleared trails! Hopped a total of six logs (3 x2 near the Fuji summit). 36 hours ago, it would've been about 250 logs, serz.

At Maiden, 19 in, I told CA "I'm gonna push hard to the top", so I did: trying to run nearly all the early sections. Felt good at first, but the legs quickly fatigued! By the time I got to the pure hiking sections, I actually had to STOP WALKING and rest for a couple seconds! Rough!

Wound up summitting in 44:27, but the AHR was 172! Really tough!

I took a seat at the rubble of the old lookout, expecting to rest a good 10-15 minutes, but only a few minutes later, here comes CA, charging to the summit! WOW. She split a 49:xx!

Ate a little brownie snack and pounded the rest of my water, then made the clunky descent. I let the HR spike (it ALWAYS does) on this long, 10K descent back to Gold. I pushed it to Maiden, then fell in rank with CA down the rest. It was pretty hot when we stopped to drink from Skyline creek. Easy back to Gold.

GOOD run but tiring! CA ran fantastic: apprehensive in the first third, but then KILLED the last third! She's much fitter than she believes. Good confidence boost for her!

Post-run: quickly packed up and drove to Shelter Cove to jump in Odell and make breakfast, then drove back to Eugene! Long day!

Splits (HR):

Gold AS to Fuji Summit: 1:36 (122 HR)
Fuji to Mt Ray AS: 1:16 (122)
Mt Ray to Maiden: 1:13 (133)
Maiden AS to summit: 44:27 (172)
Maiden summit to Gold AS: 1:07 (152)
-- TOTAL -- 5:40

*kept a RUNNING watch nearly the entire time (including a few CA bathroom stops and our water fills)

2014:

1:16 (~160!)
1:06 (137)
1:02 (149)
47:00 (169)
:55?
-- run total 4:47

Wore my old P1 N1 trails. They were great - and the feet tough! - except for an annoying blister on the TOP of my 4th toe, left foot.
