Superior 100 course - Sugarloaf to Poplar River (1mi short of finish)

August 13, 2016 (Morning)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: overcast- sunny at times, HUMID, wet

Comments:
Up early, eggs, then out before 6:45. Drove separate for the shuttle. LONG drive, over an hour!

Adam wasn't up for the whole 30, so he dropped his car halfway. Ran from Sugarloaf AS (mile 72.3) and ran to just about the finish (103.3, minus a mile), so a solid 30!

I led the whole day; Adam was gracious to let me see it all.

Summary: "not as bad as I thought":

- at time very rugged (rocky, rooted)
- at times TERRIBLE overhanging low branches and shitty corridor (but Adam insisted it'd be better - and was due to recent heavy rain)
- but lots of very runnable stretches
- VERY mellow climbs (like WAY easier than the map shows)

Kept it "fairly easy", but I don't know: my watch was dying, so I shut it off after 5mi to preserve battery. It "felt" easy, but I could tell we were in a bit of a low grind at times, especially when the sun came out for a while, climbing Carlton Peak.

I felt a bit sluggish at times, but overall this run went REALLY well. Mellow effort, and good pace: 10-12min pace the whole day (including breaks): 6hr-flat for 30, which is CR pace! There was likely about 6k of up and down, but most in very small doses.

Ate a couple clif PB bars at midway, otherwise didn't take anything but water during.

Wore a NEW pair of green N2 Trails. A little rough at first (stff). For what they lack in soft, they make up in rock protection. No issues all day, and no falls.

I've done a good number of 29-32 milers since mid-June:

- 32mi - Bristow (mid-June)
- 32mi - St Helends (7-2)
- 29mi - Waldo course (7-16)
- 29mi - Hardesty (7-30)
- 30mi - Superior (8-13)

This was by far the easiest, all round.

Post-run:
- quick towel off and change
- drive back to my car
- drive back to PIES, then to beer in Two Harbors
- drive back to Adam's house for dinner and more beers

Great day. VERY worthwhile trip!
