December 13, 2016 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: cold, super-damp, foggy
Comments:
Sort of a weird day. After a long day-weekend, we slept in a bit. I then had CA come to the office so I could work on her. Rather than try to go to Hardesty afterward -- which would invariably a shit-show of snow and low-hanging brances -- I opted for Baldy, instead.
Thinking about Hardesty and it's 65-75 minutes of climbing, it stands to reason that I should be doing more (and could handle more) than 3 baldy up-downs, so I committed to four today.
Ran easy from the house to Baldy. Felt OK, but not very spry. Then went after it.
The intent was to keep them as "easy" as I could, while still running. Like Hardesty, this would easily be threshold but not blast too high.
I went easy, but I was dismayed at A. how slow the reps turned out to be, and B. how relatively high the HR still was:
10:33 (159), 8:19 (143)
11:08 (164), 8:31 (143)
11:26 (163), 8:34 (141)
11:46 (163), 8:44 (135)
On the descents, I tried to breathe entirely through the nose, working on even nose-and-mouth breathing while running. This made them a little easier, as did the outrageous mud near the bottom.
Overall I felt good - and the summits weren't super hard - but damn, I'm not sure I've ever run Baldy that slow (other than in high-heat summer).
