Eagles Rest out and back (+double upper summit) + "Jimothy Mile"

January 22, 2017 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Weather: 40, nice

Comments:
Slept in a bit, then did some annoying Sunday "computer" work before finally getting out to run. CA decided to come with and hike-run while I was out there. After a coffee (and pre-run cookie), we drove to Hardesty TH parking lot for the run.

Rather than do Hardesty - which is an unknown of snow, downed trees and shit - I decided to do the shorter, more runnable Eagles Rest. The formal route is 14, so I figured I'd tag an extra upper summit (about 1.2mi RT), then come back and do a "Jimothy Mile" - hard on the highway-dirt road - at the very end.

Still feeling pretty rough, but overall "OK". Yesterday SUCKED, but after a day of relaxing, I felt ready to run.

Jogged EASY on the outbound, on the rolling Goodman Creek trail. HR was spikey and my gut was so-so. Felt better after a deuce stop. Once again I had my Timex watch beeping every 6min for water.

Ran SLOW up to the road (51:xx), then went decidedly harder from the Eagles TH to the summit (2.5 miles). REALLY worked on hip extension and knees-behind-feel alignment to access the glutes. Felt OK, but the trail was slick muck at times.

Also ran with tunes again: a podcast at first (listening to Jim Walmsley brag-make excuses on TRN), then tunes. Music was fun and it helped the hard running.

Ran past several groups of folks (commonplace on this trail, vs Hardesty), and probably annoyed them when I summited, went down to the Upper-Upper TH, then sumitted again!

After that, went medium back down to Goodman, then hard again along Goodman Trail. Again, very mucky and slick, with some downed trees, but made good time. ANnoyingly, my iPod crashed out (this things's a goner) so I was left without tunes for the last half-hour, again.

Finished in the parking lot, just long enough to snag a few drinks of water from CA, who finished her hike too soon to give me a bottle, then took off for the "Jimothy Mile".

Ran pretty dang hard - not quite all-out but definitely "vo2" - down the highway and onto Goodman road, light uphill, then back. I was following my watch mileage, which - in checking - was fucked up. Way long. Said my mile was "6:48"!! WTF? Based on the crazy route on the map, it was clearly wrong.

GOOD RUN. The splits (HR):

Start to Goodman-Eagles': 51:xx (14x)
Eagles TH to summit: 31:23 (163)
- decent to u-u-TH: 5:09 (158)
climb: 8:30 (169) might've included some rest time on top)
summit to Eagles TH: 20:49 (151)
Eagles TH to start: 36:06 (166)
- rest - 1:02
Jimothy "mile": 6:48 (176)

Solid run and felt good. At no point (in the latter stages, while running) did I feel depleted or "sick", which is good. Not sure if I'm getting better, but runs like this help.

Post-run: drove into Oakridge to have awesome burgers at 58 Drive-In, then home.
