January 16, 2017 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Weather: sunny but major haze down low
Comments:
Cleared my schedule in order to get in the last long vertical outing I missed over the weekend. I felt good enough and the conditions were nearly ideal.
Loaded up today with some practice items:
- iPod with podcasts and music
- water bottles (set to a 6min timer)
- "Swedish Gummy Fish"- an idea from Ted for micro-fueling
Intended to do some big park loops, but when I set out on the first one: the low-lying Trail 5 and 4...it was a disaster: trail creeks, foot-deep thick mud, just shit. So annoying.
On top of that, I've been having this left anterior pelvis and hip pain, and that, for the first time, hurt me *during* a run. So, an hour in, I was just pissed.
Thankfully, things improved on both ends: the mud ceded to nice gravel trail on the north end of Trail 4, and, when I hit my first summit, I did some hip stretching and I had no problems after that.
Chatted with Bill Montgomery (who's like, the caretaker of Mt Pisgah and a trailwork machine for Waldo!) at the top. He was graveling a mud section (an eternal battle). Then I headed down and back to the car.
Once I got there, I decided I'd stick to the high-and-dry:
- outbound on Trail 3 to Trail 4
- cross-over trail "46" to Trail 6
- figure 8 back on Trail 2 to the summit
- down Trail 1
Solid loop. Did that 1.8 times more.
Kept things chill as can be, with some power-hiking to keep things "aerobic". Admittedly, it was grindy, but pretty honest. Listened to like FOUR podcasts, including two Tim Ferriss, and two TRN (both from '16: Twiet, and Gary Robbins - both excellent). Then, when those ran out at like 3h30m, I switched to tunes.
Damn, I forgot how powerful that "candy" is! Had fun with the Biebs, but was BUMMED that it died, just before my final summit. Jogged fairly strong down.
GOOD RUN. Just over 4 hours and 5600'. Besides the hip pain early on, everything else felt good: the overall effort felt strong, the Swedish Fish worked well, and all was good! I did feel some extra left quad burn, but otherwise things were tip-top.
Wore running for the first time, a pair of green PI N1 trails. I've had them for nearly 3 years, but was saving them. I think they'll be the SOB shoe.
