Comments:
I was not mentally into it before we ran and was actually yawning at points. I about where I should have been, but my legs felt horrendous the first mile. I stayed with Vaughn and the two of us slowly fell back together over the course of the next three miles. I had no traction whatsoever on the destroyed course and made no move to reinsert myself into the race. I didn’t think at all. I just kept plotting along conservatively in my place for the entire rest of the race. I came up the last hill and saw Grese and Chris Kelly yelling at me to get a kid in green that had just passed me and I instantly locked on and kicked hard. I passed him and two more guys before the end of the race where I finished in 28:51, sixth on our team. We found out that we finished fifth in the D3 meet and were only 20 points from third place and it became obvios that I cost us about 20 points and two places myself by not running where I should have been. I finished this race actually feeling pretty good about myself because I did not totally blow up. Coach Barnes told everyone on the team to subtract about 1:15 from their times to compare to last year, in which case I ran 1:38 faster. This was by far the best I’ve ever run this course. That being said, I cost the team badly today. I think I need to come to grips with an awful lot right now. Right now, the team would not be going to nationals. We would not be anywhere even close. I have been awfully positive this year and awfully conservative. I think I might have been too positive, to the point where I’ve lost the desire for pain and the will to make things happen. It’s nice to feel better during races, especially at the beginning, but I know I have to do a lot better finishing and be hungrier. This was a weird meet because I had no time to mentally prepare myself for it this week. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen and today it just might have been for the best. However, there will come a point in the not-too-distant future where just getting by isn’t enough.
