April 30, 2017 (Morning)
Exercise Type: Run
Comments:
Tired this morning but I had to get up and make my way to Kendrick Park. It was kinda chilly actually but comfortable biking up. When I got there there were not a lot of people around, but it filled up real quick to the little party. I did a short warm up over to the high school, found a real legit pee spot then came back with like 20 min before the race. Legs felt on the heavy side actually, not like last nights shake out. Made me a little bit nervous since it was a little longer distance. I did some drills and the sun started to shine in and I felt a little more in the race mode. It was kinda chaotic with the 5k/10k. Every one started together but they wanted 10k people near the front. I was right up on the line. I like the start since you can just run down the middle of the street through town and everyone is out there cheering for you and stuff. I didnt want to go out too fast since my mileage and training is low and its a long, hilly route. Felt good through the first mile keeping with a pack, mile just under 6. At that point we go up Whitney and everyone slows down. I kept the pace and used it to move ahead like I would have in the 5k. We still had a few good packs here and there. Still held a standard sub 6 pace up through that section, and the pack I was with caught me on the downhill. I let the next pack go ahead and stayed back with a few of those guys that got me on the downhill, but they all turned off the the 5k, and left me solo now chasing the pack that I had just let go. It left me all alone in no mans land, 15 secs behind that pack and probably 25-30 sec ahead of the next guy. I started to struggle there since we had some hills here and there going out on East Pleasant. I could still see the pack ahead, which had Kris leading, but it was a struggle to get up to them. I had spurts of speed here and there but I could really start to feel the extra mileage. We went around a little neighborhood, then came back on E Pleasant. I didnt realize it but the hills there were also pretty brutal, especially at that part in the race. There was one guy dropping off the pack that I eventually caught, but he was struggling so much he didnt go with me. We only had 1.5 miles left or so and I was totally ready to be done. That was all downhill and by then we started to mix into the 5k runners/walkers. It was kinda fun to swing to the side and just blaze past all of them down the hill. I actually started closing on to another guy off that pack I was chasing. Once I got to the bottom of the hill, saw the time on my watch and realized I was dangerously close to 40 min, which I really wanted to break, so I threw on the burners and just sprinted around the park. It was a huge kick I didnt know I had, but probably should have expected with how conservative I went and how I was alone half the race. It worked out great since I snagged an extra spot and came into the finish just in time. I was pretty gassed after finishing from that kick. Legs didnt feel too destroyed though. Definitely a odd distance to do if you havnt run like that in a while. Its way different from a 5k, and nothing like a 10 miler. In all it was fun though and there were a lot of people out around the park.
Essentials: Stretch
Did a little bit of stretching and moseying around before getting a short cooldown around the block, then finished up stretching. We waited around for the results for a while. The 5k were there but the times seemed whacky, and the 10k were nowhere. They finally came as they were doing the awards, but they were also completely wrong. Some people had slower net times than gun times by like a minute, and thats impossible. Mine was way off and my gun time was also off the time that I saw on the clock, so neither of them were right. Also the places were not in the right order... We figured out that Kris got 3rd, and I was 6th maybe, but still could have been outside the age group. I was definitely 3rd in the age group but we dont know if the second was also in the top 3. Eitherway it was chaos and no one knew what was going down. I wasnt too bummed since I had a good race and good finish. As they were figuring all this out a lot of people had already cleared out and it was starting to get dark and windy so I biked it back home. I think they should keep the 10k it brought a lot of people to the race, but they need to figure out the timing since it was all messed up and I think some people were really confused and upset about it. Good thing I had my watch and got my time secured.
