Ithaca Relayz

May 5, 2017 (Night)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
I started out on the hurdle crew and then I walked around to find other things to do until I had a better idea of whether I was running in the 4xmile or not. No one really needed me to do anything so I just pretended to work where the relay teams were checking in so I could at least feel like I was being productive. When I saw Lizzy, Grace, Zoe, and Ingrid warming up I started to settle in because that was basically a sign I wasn't running. Not long after that, Emma came up to me and said I was running in the 4x800m. For a second I just stood there with a probably incredulous look on my face because the race was going off in less than 10 minutes and I never heard anything about running in a 4x800m. I wasn't mad at Emma; I understood that she couldn't run and it would be better if someone else ran for her. So I grabbed my spikes, went to the bathroom, and then went over the benches next to the check in area to put my spikes on. It couldn't have taken me more than 5 minutes to prepare, but by the time I got to the line Nisha was already running and I was the second leg. One nice thing about such a short notice was that I never had time to think about the race because I was only focused on exactly what I needed to do in the moment.
I didn't have to wait long for the baton. I think something finally clicked when I was running. Over the past one or two weeks I felt like I was forcing myself too much, but today it felt almost normal. Just in time too, because if I don't qualify for anything this week then my season is over. I only just realized this because I felt like my season just started (and in a way it did) and I didn't think it could end so soon. I think the next time I run the 800 (if there is a next time) or any other race for that matter, I should be able to run a lot faster than I have been.
