Salesianum!

October 7, 2017 (Afternoon)

Exercise Type: Run

Comments:
Such a great surprise of a day! Got to the meet and it was already hot and muggy and I felt awful on the warmups. I always feel way worse on warmups than the race, but I especially wasn't feeling it today. Really was not excited to race at all until the gun went off, and then suddenly I was just in it and feeling good and excited to work hard. Cruised through the wooded downhill part not consciously pushing the pace, but allowing myself to pass people if it felt comfortable. Came out of the woods and got up the two hills without even feeling that bad, and then really tried to follow Anthony's directions and sprint the next bit. Really proud of how hard I was able to push the next 800 meters after the hill, and heard Anthony scream "YES AVIDON" which was encouraging. Felt good past Matt's wonderful cheering (so sweet that he flew down just for the meet!) and until the beginning of the death march. Then I really started to feel tired, and while I tried to stay upright with good form, it felt like I wasn't making much progress and the people in front of me just kept pulling farther away. Close to the end of the death march, Anthony was cheering and yelled that I was 25th, and thinking that top 20 medal, I screamed inwardly and pushed the last half mile very hard, passing 5 people before the finish line. Apparently top 15 medal at Salesianum which is a tiny bit disappointing, but I'm still incredibly happy with how I raced and that I was able to finish that hard. Also, we came second for JV girls and got shirts and a "chip bowl" medal!!! I love xc either way, but doing well and feeling like I contributed is really fun and exciting, and amidst a really hard week, it was a pretty surreal day!
